Listen to what Set & Centered is all about:  ranch-life shenanigans, "should’ve been easy" projects that go sideways, and rescue dogs supervising with maximum side-eye and zero help. In this episode we set the tone, explain what you can expect each week, and give you a taste of the banter before we jump into full episodes.

SPEAKER_02

Alright, here we are. It's our first thing that we're recording.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, we are.

SPEAKER_02

So what the hell uh what are we doing? Like what the hell is this? Is the thing.

SPEAKER_01

Uh we're starting a podcast on uh kind of some of the stuff going on around here and what we got going and what we've done and since I got down here for the first visit in May. And now we're uh fully moved down here, got down here what first part of November, and Ryan came up with this thing. It's like, hey, let's do a podcast. So we've been throwing that back and forth for oh geez, probably months, month and a half.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, a couple months, I think.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and so finally got everything set up, and so here we go to see if we can make some people laugh and some people go, Oh god, what's going on? I know it's mostly gonna be the oh god thing. I I know, and it's not in a good way.

SPEAKER_02

Well, no, you know, it's not entirely our fault though, because people tell us, have told us that like you know, hey, you should do uh you like a YouTube or a tic tac or whatever, right? Yeah, but like whatever.

SPEAKER_01

Welcome to 7 Eleven. I don't have that one.

SPEAKER_02

Um but like you know, we don't want to do video stuff, right?

SPEAKER_01

No, uh-uh, not not too thrilled with people seeing what I actually look like.

SPEAKER_02

Well, yeah, I mean we don't want to be like on the camera. I've heard it adds you know a few hundred pounds.

SPEAKER_01

Oh Jesus, I can't handle that. I'd be on that show at my 600-pound life.

SPEAKER_02

Is that a real show? Yeah, it's a real show. I thought it was just something people said. Um, yeah, so uh like you know, people have told us, like a friends and family, you know, you should do a YouTube, da da da da. So, or like, you know, maybe a podcast. Um and you know, part of the reason is I should say like the drive to do it. There's a few reasons, but one is that there's just there's a lot of fun things that happen out here.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, there is.

SPEAKER_02

And a lot of like not so fun things.

SPEAKER_01

Um yeah, like daylight.

SPEAKER_02

That I got up at nine o'clock today.

SPEAKER_01

What the heck? I didn't even get up until 10 30.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it was it was weird. Um but like anyway, so there's a lot of there's just a lot of stories to tell, and you know, uh being out here on the ranch, and the whole reason that the ranch is is here that exists is you know to be a a sanctuary for rescue dogs. And so people are always interested in that. And I just feel like uh, you know, it'd be hopefully entertaining for folks. I think it's also um, you know, in a way cathartic to kind of like you know cathartic, that's a big word.

SPEAKER_01

What does that mean? Jesus Christ.

SPEAKER_02

As soon as I said it.

SPEAKER_01

I am a simple man. Oh god. Or a kid. I'm more like a kid.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, well. I guess uh what how can I use small word to explain things? Um no, uh basically like I threw him off. Yeah, I know you really did. I didn't think cathartic would do it, if I'm honest. Uh I'm gonna have to dial down my vocabulary. Um wait, dumb it down. See easy words. Yeah. But no, like I think um I don't know, it's something that people are interested in. I think um it's something that well, I uh let me put it this way. I think we have a story to tell. I think we have a lot of stories to tell.

SPEAKER_01

Um definitely do. Oh, it says uh providing psychological relief through the opening of strong emotions, causing another catharsis. Yes, I looked it up. Now I'm educated, I'm going home.

SPEAKER_02

All right. I guess you know, there's probab there are probably people out there who didn't know what that word meant, so I can't.

SPEAKER_01

And this is the way it's gonna always be.

SPEAKER_02

Uh never mind. Tear it down. Tear it down. Take the mics back. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Is it over 30 days? Can you send them back? I don't know. Probably is because, you know, the way I roll.

SPEAKER_02

It's like, yeah, let's do a podcast.

SPEAKER_01

Still a podcast. I'll buy everything that'll sit there in a corner for a while.

SPEAKER_02

Yes. But, you know, absolutely, you know, to be fair, of course, that's how I am. But to be fair, we are here doing this right now. Yes, we are. That's impressive. Yep. Um for us, it's really impressive. Super impressive. And actually, that's that's a good segue. If you don't have to look that word up, do you? Segway? No, huh?

SPEAKER_01

Isn't that one of those things you write on?

SPEAKER_02

Okay. So that's a good segue to uh like goddamn it. Uh what did I say? It's a good segue. Oh, uh, no, no, no, us. Like you're us, you know, but we don't do stuff. Yeah, so that's actually a good segue to another reason uh why I was personally interested in trying to do this is yeah, we do have a bad track record of getting things done. And I thought maybe, you know, maybe there's some account of we could hold ourselves accountable to an extent.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, if we did that, we'd never do anything again.

SPEAKER_02

Well okay. But you know, yeah, I know exactly. Like, you know, if uh we know for sure, like, because there's been a lot of buzz about this between like my mom and like you know, a fr one of your friends. So we know we're gonna have at least two followers.

SPEAKER_01

Uh yeah, yeah, at least at least 2.5.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so you know, we throw the stuff out there, and you know, we don't we're gonna want to come back the next week and be like, oh geez.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, is this a schedule to do it like weekly? Yeah. Not the same time every week, right? Uh that would be a push. Yeah, that would be r I don't know if we are even capable of doing that. No, huh? Because we got a whole bunch of dumb stuff to do in between.

SPEAKER_02

Well, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, uh, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Stuff. Stuff things. Yeah. Um, yeah, it's it it it'll be weekly. Uh I'm glad you said that actually, because the whole thing we're doing right now is to you know, talking telling people about things. So it'll be weekly. Um and the idea is you know, what's what's going you know, basically what's going on now? You know, what have we been up to? You know, some funny things. I realize I say you know a lot, you know? I didn't notice that. Um I didn't know. No, you know. Uh I'm just like, you know, kind of a god damn it, now I hear it.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Um are my voices in my head coming through the microphone.

SPEAKER_02

They are. Oh shit. Yeah. I think your headphones are on too tight.

SPEAKER_01

It's because I don't make them in my size.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. So every we we're, you know, gonna sit down, hit record, and talk shop. And it it'll be loose. Of course it's gonna be loose. You know, we don't have the whatever discipline to make it anything other than loose. Yeah. And I know her. Oh jeez. I'm right out the gate. Um, and then we're gonna we're we're gonna do some other stuff too. Uh maybe in between or in parallel to our weekly deal, um, where we have sort of special episodes or shorts. I think we're calling them shorts for now, but um the things that like, you know, there have been some big things. Let's say things bigger than uh you can shove into a weekly conversation in terms of stories, like the forest fire.

SPEAKER_01

Like the forest for God bless the fire department. Yes, let's throw foam on that, it'll go it'll work.

SPEAKER_02

You know, I know I went there. They come out in the middle of the freaking night. That's because we don't know you think. Put this fire out, and all you've done about is complain about the foam.

SPEAKER_01

Because we had to sit there for the next eight hours and make sure it didn't reflame like it did. And you think that was because of the foam? Um, yeah, I do. I think it was because of the foam, and they wanted to get home and drink beer.

SPEAKER_02

Well, that's what I wanted to do too.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but we were able to do that.

SPEAKER_02

That's true. Um I feel like we've already gone off on a tangent, but yeah, anyway, the forest fire. We're gonna we're gonna have an episode, a short episode about the forest fire. And, you know, we have there's others like significant stories and events and things that people who haven't been here, you know, or just kind of diving in with this right now, they're not gonna know. And somehow we're gonna make a lot of references to things. And if we tried to tell these stories in every weekly episode, it would be like, okay, here's your here's this week's episode, it's four and a half hours long.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and and if we're gonna do that, I think we need some uh paper and a pen or something so that we can uh jot down so it reminds us of oh yeah, we've gotta talk about how that happened.

SPEAKER_02

I see what you did. What did I do? Paper and pen.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, because I'm old. Oh uh.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, okay. You're so old you you actually miss an opportunity to mess with me. I'm the one who keeps telling you to get a freaking pen and paper, stop tippy tapping into your phone everything. I know.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yeah, but I couldn't look it up cathartic on my on a pen and a piece of paper.

SPEAKER_02

You could have written it down to look up later.

SPEAKER_01

I want to know how to spell it.

SPEAKER_02

See, I went. So, um goddamn. God damn it. Uh I'll get you I'll get you a pad and a pen for next time. How about that? Okay, hopefully it's a pad I can write on. What do you what does that mean? Nothing. Okay. Um so you want to talk about the name of the podcast?

SPEAKER_01

Uh Satin Centered?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Which part do we want to talk about? Jesus Christ.

SPEAKER_02

Let's start with the set. You know what I mean. Like, people are, you know, what's where how why is it called that?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, because of what our past experiences in life have been.

SPEAKER_02

Sort of, kinda, you know. This has gone terribly. Okay, so I'm gonna talk about the name of the podcast.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, please do, because I'm really entranced with this clock that you have over here.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, well, make sure to take that away next time. Um yeah, so set and centered is uh it is a railroad term. Uh we're we both have a railroad background. It's where we met actually at the railroad. Yes. And set and centered in railroad parlance is it's a safety um term. It means if you're gonna be working in front of or behind a train, uh you the locomotive engineer will set the brakes and center the uh throttle position. And that effectively means the you know it's not gonna move. So I'll say set and centered. Now, admittedly, we were just throwing out stuff and words and terms that sounded cool. Um and between you, me, Christina, and Brian, we kind of did a vote. I think we had like five or something, and we kind of like, yeah, set and centered. The more that ever since we've decided on that, the more it just kind of fits. Because it's like set aside the railroad term, right? Set and centered is it sounds like people who have their shit together. Yes. And so that's why it's funny, because it's like the opposite.

SPEAKER_01

Definitely, definitely the opposite.

SPEAKER_02

And I'll tell you a funny thing, because I was using um like logo generator stuff, whatever, to like help me kind of get a logo. Okay. Were you using your guy? I use my yeah, well, yeah, I think he actually ended up doing it, but um, different AI stuff. And so, like the prompt is like make a logo for set and centered, and this is how I knew that we got the right name. Because invariably, you know, they come back with like five concepts, and it'd be like yoga, like peace, you know, like zen crap. Like, oh yeah, this is the complete opposite of this disaster we're about to do.

SPEAKER_01

That is true.

SPEAKER_02

So I think we got it.

SPEAKER_01

I I 100% believe that we've got it.

SPEAKER_02

Uh so it's gonna be every week. That's why it's called what it's called. We are we don't know what the fuck we're doing. I think we should mention that, right?

SPEAKER_01

Well, I don't know. It sounds pretty good. I thought we knew what the fuck we were doing on the audio? Well, if I don't turn my head, because then it sounds like we're going down the road.

SPEAKER_02

Oh no, no, no. Well, yeah. Yeah. No, I mean, yeah, but uh the the first test we it sounded good. No, I mean like we just we've never done a podcast. So we think we got the audio set up right. A lot of YouTube. Yes. Uh for you, not for me. Um, we think we have the audio set up right, but then also, you know, to take this and publish it if people are gonna listen to it, whatever. So we don't know what we're doing. Um looking at the timer on this on this show here. It's 14 minutes. So we've been podcasting for 14 minutes. Holy crap, are we famous yet? I haven't looked, but it's possible.

SPEAKER_01

Well, it hasn't even been published, so we're still just the same that we were. What if we're live and I didn't tell you? Well, that'd be really cool. It's live. Let's go to our first collar now. Yeah, let's go to our first caller. Hi, Ryan's mom. How are you? Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know what? I would be offended, but she probably will be our first caller and be awesome. It will be. Your mom is so awesome. She's fantastic. She is. Yes. Um, but yeah, that I think hopefully, you know, hopefully people will listen.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's the hope. I mean, if not, we're just talking in the wind. Well, yeah. Except, well, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Um I should I I feel like I sh I I did we didn't mention something that's fairly important, which is we're we we hope to build an audience, we hope to build a following. Yes, um, we hope to ultimately generate revenue, and we're gonna be very transparent about that. Um, but revenue to support the dog rescue, the animal rescue, not to put in our pockets.

SPEAKER_01

What? No. Like, oh, I'm out. I'm out. I mean, I thought I was for Medello's and Dr. Pepper Zero's. Like, those are just expenses, so technically.

SPEAKER_02

Can we write them off yet? Not we're only 15 minutes in. Okay. But uh, you know, hopefully hopefully we do get enough people interested and following and listening that eventually we're not gonna we're not gonna try for revenue anytime soon, but eventually, um, hopefully we it can be a way to you know pay for some dog food here and there because that's expensive.

SPEAKER_01

Well, if you rescue little dogs, it'd be a lot easier.

SPEAKER_02

I did, and then it turned into a big dog in the span of a week and a half. Yeah, I did. Oh my god. Yeah, I did. Oh Hartley. Well, I think, yeah. So I think I got him at lost and found. Well, should take him back. I don't think they take him back. He won't fit in the slot anymore. No, uh-uh.

SPEAKER_01

He finds his way back home now. He's old enough. Yeah, I know. It's horrible.

SPEAKER_02

Um, well, yeah, I think so. Hopefully I'll listen. Um, we'll have website and social and stuff. We'll kind of get that information out there when we can. Um, but for now, well, thanks for listening tonight, and we'll catch y'all later.

SPEAKER_01

Y'all have a good one.

SPEAKER_00

True one star. Yes, it's dead. Five minutes later. It's a nice day.
