Frozen Nights, Warm Lessons
The Texas cold snapped harder than expected and tested every weak link we had. We call Christina for a raw perspective of her first Texas freeze. She brings the receipts on procrastination and nudges us to share more of who we are. So we do: We talk about how 50 acres in East Texas became a refuge for dogs to live out their lives, and why that mission demands a different kind of resilience. If this storm taught us anything, it’s that comfort is engineered, community is chosen, and the dogs still expect breakfast on time.

Hey everybody, uh welcome back to this week's episode of Set and Center. I'm RJ. This is Mart. It's been a few days, eh? The last few days. Yeah, it's been quite fun. Uh so if you listened to the last episode, uh, and we hope you did. We we were talking about getting ready for winter storm uh coming through Texas. And and and not just Texas, like basically half the country. It was it was crazy. Terrible. Yeah, it really was. Um so the good news is this the predicted ice that we were supposed to get ended up being a lot less. Um the bad news is the predicted temperatures ended up being uh quite a bit colder.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, a lot lasted more days than they talked about.
SPEAKER_05:A little bit. Well, not really, because I you I did tell you it was gonna be longer than you thought.
SPEAKER_03:And you're like, I know, I was waiting for the weatherman to tell me, and he as usual lied to me.
SPEAKER_05:What so you probably use apps, right?
SPEAKER_03:Uh no, I find the best looking chick on on YouTube that's given Texas weather. She's a typical blonde.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah, well because the other well, yes oh yeah, I think it was last night. I was telling I was telling you, like, you know, it's gonna be a lot colder tonight, and I think you thought like you know, fifteen, seventeen, and then I see a picture of my TV, the channel the channel, because I get one channel. Um, and they were talking about the weather and what did it say 10?
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, it was something like that.
SPEAKER_05:And you were like, oh, okay.
SPEAKER_03:Oh, okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_05:Uh so you know, let's talk about let's talk about how we fared in the storm. Uh I'll start. Great. You're up.
SPEAKER_03:Not worth a shit.
SPEAKER_04:Oh my god.
SPEAKER_03:Oh, Jesus. Uh it was good. I mean, why was it Saturday night, Sunday morning when it rolled in and then uh went to bed? And of course, we know I'd sleep with a CPAP. Well, about five something in the morning, boo, freaking powers out, CPAP sticks to your face. Okay, I'm not gonna sleep. Sticks.
SPEAKER_05:What do you mean?
SPEAKER_03:Well, it because of the pressure that it's pushing on you, then all the pressure's gone, so it it feels like it glues to your face there for a second. Okay, yeah. So uh I got up because I didn't want to, you know, I'll just lay there and toss and turn. So I got up so I wouldn't disturb Christina and went down, sat in the chair. It's like phone's almost dead. Nothing to charge it with. Crap. So I went out in the truck, fired up the truck. I'll back though. Uh I'm getting there, I'm getting there. Uh, so I plugged in the phone and it starts charging. Wait about 10 minutes, truck still blowing cold air. Another 10 minutes, still blowing cold air.
SPEAKER_05:I'm like, oh and so we uh uh we should pause for a second and say uh at this point it's about 20 degrees, right?
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, right around 20 degrees. Okay. Right around 20 degrees. So then I know I had a problem with the truck, so okay, phone's not gonna charge anymore because it's just as cold outside as it is inside because I didn't uh have the propane heater on in the trailer. And so about eight o'clock, I'm I go, I'm just gonna go up in bed. So I did, and then like 8:30, 8:40, the boo power comes back on. Christina starts getting up and she's like, What are you doing? I'm putting my mask back on. I'm going to sleep. Slept till like 11:30 that that morning.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah, yeah. And uh you mentioned the propane and and so uh it was it was quite cold in in y'all's trailer, right?
SPEAKER_03:Oh, very cold in the trailer. I bet it was about maybe five degrees warmer uh in the trailer than it was outside.
SPEAKER_05:Oh god, really that cold?
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, that cold. And and my problem is is I'm a cheap bastard and I have to go get all of my propane tanks certified because when I took uh took them in right before Christmas, the guy's like, oh, this one's out of date as of November. This one goes out of date next week, but I'll go ahead and fill them up for you since it's Christmas. So now I gotta find someplace local, hope there is, that I can get the tank certified and then have it filled. So it's like they're saying it's between anywhere between$25 and$60 to have a tank certified.
SPEAKER_05:So weird. I never heard of it. Is it just for these size of tanks or no?
SPEAKER_03:Every propane tank has to be certified every five to ten years. Oh, geez. All right. And back home, they you just throw your propane tank up on their little table, fill them all up, however many you have, and and they say, you know, they call it in to the gal in in the office thing, little place called Four Corners up there in Castle Rock, Washington. And so then when you go in there, she just tells you the price, give her the money, gives you a receipt, out the door you go. Yeah. First time I use it down here, it's like crap.
SPEAKER_05:Well, yeah, I I didn't know either. Um so yeah, it was you said it was well, obviously very cold in your trailer. I I'll tell you, um, I was pretty rough over here when the power went out. Um I bullshit. Well, you know, with here's here I I struggled through the storm to an extent, and I'll tell you why. Uh when I would go out and check on the dogs and and or do some, you know, whatever, de-ice the truck, and I came back in the house. Oh my god, it was so hot in the house. And I take my jacket off, right, you know. But uh anyway, so power goes out, CPAP goes down, truck won't heat, can't charge your phone. But uh, so what'd you do? Go get yourself a nice glass of water. You wanna talk about the water situation?
SPEAKER_03:Actually, I I on the way back in the house from the truck, I stopped by the outdoor kitchen on the the fifth wheel and got me a Dr. Pepper Zero.
SPEAKER_05:Okay.
SPEAKER_03:Um needless to say, that that refrigerator wasn't running because it was colder than what I have it set for.
SPEAKER_05:Oh, sure, yeah. Yeah. So uh let's let's back up for a second. I uh teed that up for you to talk about your your water uh after the power went out. Oh shit.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, that was the other part. Uh so anybody that lives in an RV or has I can't say you live in a that's against the law. No, anybody that has spent time in an RV Yeah occupied and in the winter time, you know to let the water run. Well, when you're on a well and you let the water run, it also drains the the pressure tank.
SPEAKER_05:When when oh well hold on, when the power's not on.
SPEAKER_03:That's right. When the power goes out and you leave the water running, yeah.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah, because the well runs off of electricity, obviously.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah.
SPEAKER_05:So you guys were doing the right thing and running the faucets inside. Yep. And then the power went out. I thought it was the right thing. Well, it it it was until it really wasn't. Yeah. So yeah, yeah. So uh you're you and then the well froze, right?
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, well froze, uh, no pressure in the tank. Uh solid, froze solid, hose to the trailer, froze solid, uh, froze like three inches into the the hose that you took it into for the trailer.
SPEAKER_05:God.
SPEAKER_03:Yep.
SPEAKER_05:And it took well, cause I let's see, power went out about 5 30 that morning. I feel like it was about 5 p.m. that I stopped by to see how things were going. Yeah. And I think you said you had just sort of gotten water flowing again.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, I uh because that next day it was uh the sun was out, so I went and disconnected the hoses, got them defrosted, got the one to the trailer defrosted, and then had to pull the hose all the way up towards the the well because the sun was hitting there and let it defrost and just turned on the water and it finally defrosted and it got back to the house. And I asked her, I asked Christine, hey, you got water yet? She's no, and I'm like, Oh shit. So then it's okay, it's frozen the trailer. So it's like, okay, let's do the smart thing for once in my life and go ahead and turn on the propane heater because it's in the floor and it maybe it'll heat up the water. Yeah, it only took like 15 minutes, and I'll be damned if we didn't have water. Well, we had cold water, yeah, and then the hot water, the tank had almost froze solid, so no water was getting through. So I turned on the because it had tripped the thing, so I turned back on the propane for the hot water, and it goes off. And after about another 30 minutes or so, we had hot water. So great. Yeah, until last night when Christina went to go take a shower and she didn't have any hot water out there. Oh, was it not working again? Yeah, uh I guess it froze up there again because we had hot water at the kitchen sink and at the rear bathroom sink. Yeah, I guess it's a one and a half bath fifth wheel. And so, yeah, and then all of a sudden I had water, but then I had all this orange shit coming out from the last place we were at in Washington. Yeah, they're well sucked.
SPEAKER_05:Well, it yeah, it did, it really did, based on what he told me. Uh, but to be fair, it's hard to beat uh fresh Texas well water.
SPEAKER_03:Oh, this Texas well water is the best. I remember when I first came down, it's like, oh my god, this is so wonderful. So good. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah. Um uh you said something. Uh yeah, I forgot what I was gonna say. So yeah, the um maybe did I interrupt you?
SPEAKER_03:No, uh-uh. I was just sitting here thinking though, you've told your side, I've pulled mine. Why don't we give a third person a call and see what she thought about it? Oh, oh, dare dare we? Uh, get your bleep button ready. Oh, well, yeah, all right.
SPEAKER_05:Okay. Uh couple episodes ago, we figured out how to use the phone, right? Let's see if we remember.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, but we haven't used it since. That's the problem. Yeah, that's what happens when you get hold of you, you'll use it every once in a while.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah, so the savvy listener may have picked up that we're gonna call Christina.
SPEAKER_03:I'm not here. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05:I uh I yeah, this will be interesting. Um, okay. That's a good radio.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, that's my canteen over here.
SPEAKER_05:It's one of those things they say is you you know, uh like a cardinal sin of radio is dead air, right? Yeah. Thank you for twisting the top on that can so people had something to do with it.
SPEAKER_03:Well, I was also trying to find Finley because he came in with us and he was on my lap and now he's down at your feet. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Shh. You gonna talk first? I'll talk first. Yeah, I'll talk first.
SPEAKER_01:Hello.
SPEAKER_03:Hello, what are you doing?
SPEAKER_01:Uh just got done watching that movie.
SPEAKER_03:Okay. Are you ready to be on the podcast?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:Well, whatever you got in the background, turn that crap off.
SPEAKER_01:I'm trying. I'm trying. It's not going off.
SPEAKER_03:Give it to the dog, she'll show you how to turn that sucker off.
SPEAKER_01:She's all cuddled up in your blanket in your chair.
SPEAKER_03:Oh, damn. Get the sand out of my chair before I get back. Oh, geez, yeah. What movie are you watching?
SPEAKER_01:Um I don't know. I just started it, but I turned it off.
SPEAKER_04:Oh, great. Oh, so you finish it.
SPEAKER_01:Uh something with Justin Timberlake, and he was in prison and a 12-year-old boy. So yeah.
SPEAKER_05:Okay, well, sorry for interrupting your movie. I didn't do it.
SPEAKER_01:Mark did it, so you know, he's always doing it. I know.
SPEAKER_03:Um, whose name came up on the phone?
SPEAKER_01:Um, I can't read tonight.
SPEAKER_03:You're so full of shit. My eyes are brown. Fair enough. Well, we just gave uh each of our sides of the of the winter storm that we just went through. And yeah, Ryan's was short because he said it was great. So now we're gonna go ahead.
SPEAKER_01:Well, he was prepared. We were not.
SPEAKER_03:This is true. So so since I gave my side and stuff, I we wanted to get your side of it coming from the cold state of Washington, also like me, and see what you thought of it.
SPEAKER_01:Um, Texas is neat, it has a cold side.
SPEAKER_05:It does, doesn't it? It's kind of like an X-Y.
SPEAKER_01:Really, really cold side.
SPEAKER_05:Did it uh did it catch you off guard?
SPEAKER_01:It did. I did not expect it to be what it was.
SPEAKER_03:What were you expecting?
SPEAKER_01:I guess I was expecting semi-cold and a little bit of rain and sleep, not all the frozen stuff. Yeah, and it was really, really cold.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, yeah, yeah. How did how did you do without water?
SPEAKER_01:Um, it was very interesting because you know, my husband said two days before, oh, we should probably fill up that container of water just in case. Yeah, we had no water.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah, procrastination. Fill up the big when you say container, you're talking about the big like 300 gallon uh tote that we have over there or you guys have over there.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, yeah I mean it didn't have to be full, just enough for at least a couple days.
SPEAKER_05:Did he fill it all the way up though?
SPEAKER_01:He didn't fill it at all.
SPEAKER_05:Oh, he didn't? Oh my goodness. He you know what? He okay, this I I like this now because he told me the same damn thing. He's like, yeah, I filled up the water tote mode or said I was going to. Okay, fair enough, yeah.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah.
SPEAKER_05:So wait, out of out of the two of us, Mark, me being very prepared and just downright hot during that whole storm. Um, I also I also filled the water tote. My water tote. I know, I seen the picture. Yeah, yeah. Wow. Well, so have you made a list of things um that you're going to uh make sure he does for next time and hold over his head for the rest of his life out of the storm?
SPEAKER_01:Well, I'll probably hold it over his head for the rest of his life, but trying to get Mark to do something is another thing. So I'll probably just have to do it.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah, I know. That's what I meant. Think things that he should do that you will do.
SPEAKER_03:You know what's on the top of her list? For me to take her to the airport on Friday so she'd get the hell out.
SPEAKER_05:Yes, yeah. Uh cuz because uh because you're flying back, you're flying back home, right? Oh, that's not home. That's not home anymore. Well, I can mute him at any point if you need me to, Christina.
SPEAKER_01:You know, I really I really love the beep, Ryan. Could you just beat them?
SPEAKER_05:Oh, uh yeah. There. Does that work? He didn't really say anything bad though. So the yeah.
SPEAKER_01:I love that beep.
SPEAKER_05:Thank you. I I spent an inordinate amount of time finding just the right bleep for us. Just the right bleep.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah. Yeah. So anyway, on the on your weather thing, is that all you had to say? Was that it wasn't it was bad, but you got through it, right?
SPEAKER_01:Barely.
SPEAKER_03:Barely, yeah. Did you feel like you were freezing your ass off in the trailer?
SPEAKER_01:I was freezing my ass off in the trailer. It was bad when we didn't have any electricity.
SPEAKER_05:Are you hearing that, Mark? Yeah, yeah. Are you hearing that, Christina?
SPEAKER_01:What?
SPEAKER_05:Do you hear static, Christina?
SPEAKER_01:No.
SPEAKER_05:Okay, hold on. I'll mark that in the audio. Okay, uh go ahead. What you were saying, sorry.
SPEAKER_01:Um, it was probably the worst when we didn't have electricity because then there was absolutely no way to get any heat. We couldn't plug in the blanket or anything.
SPEAKER_05:You know what you should have done. This is what we do in Fort Worth when we had lost power. We would just go get in and get in our vehicle and start up and run the heat there.
SPEAKER_01:That's a fucking danger. I I I was actually sleeping and I woke up looking for him. And guess where he was? He was in his truck with the heater on so he could charge his phone.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah, we actually just covered that a few minutes ago. Yeah, about the heater not working in the truck. But the fun part is there was no heat, even though the heater was on.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, but don't wake up your wife and say, Honey, let's go sit in the rig and get you warm.
SPEAKER_03:Because you were under 15 blankets and cuddled with the dog.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_05:So I think I think uh if I could mediate here, which uh I love to mediate y'all's marriage, it's fun. Uh no. Um, I think we'll call this one a draw because I think, Christina, you got a really good point. But on the other hand, if he had gotten you out of that pile of blankets and taken you out into the bitter cold, into the truck, and you just sat there and it was just cold and cold and cold because he didn't work. Boy, you'd not been happy about that, right?
SPEAKER_01:I think the optimal word is he could have possibly invited me and then I could have made that choice.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah, well, I think okay. We're out of it's not a draw anymore. You and Christina because you're chooser side, choose her side. Yeah, well, I told you guys before, I with I uh with you guys, I choose my side tactically in the moment. I'm not permanently on either side. Um in this case I think she's right because you you could have been like, hey, you know what, I'm gonna go start the truck and for the heat. Would you like to come? And then uh Christina, it sounds like would have said, why don't you get it you know warmed up? Yeah, and then and then I'll you know I'll come out there when it's warm. Uh which would have been never because it it wouldn't have gotten warm.
SPEAKER_03:Okay, it's enough picking on me. Is it yeah? Okay, Christina, you've you've listened to the podcast. Yes. Yes, yes, like all of the episodes is what you mean. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:So you've listened to the episodes.
SPEAKER_03:Okay, you did a little critique sheet for us.
SPEAKER_01:Oh.
SPEAKER_03:Do you have that?
SPEAKER_01:Well, yeah, but shouldn't that be like private?
SPEAKER_05:Well, okay, so it uh here's the thing. Um, I understand you you had some notes, right?
SPEAKER_01:I did.
SPEAKER_05:So I just I guess I just have one question. Uh-huh. Why do you hate the podcast?
SPEAKER_01:I don't hate the podcast.
SPEAKER_05:That's not what you said.
SPEAKER_01:No, no, no. I didn't say that I hate the podcast. I knew that never came out of my mouth.
SPEAKER_05:I heard you actually threw ripped your headphones out and threw the phone across the trailer. Is that yeah? Did that not happen? Yeah. Okay. Towards me. Towards me.
SPEAKER_01:It didn't happen. It didn't happen. I could tell you all the things that I love about it.
SPEAKER_05:Uh I'm never gonna say no to uh somebody stroking my ego.
SPEAKER_01:So all right, so I asked.
SPEAKER_05:Or anything else, frankly. But in this context, Mark, that's wildly inappropriate. Um downright disrespectful. No, but no, you didn't you didn't, you know what, you earn your bleeps.
SPEAKER_01:Yes, he did.
SPEAKER_05:Um well, yeah. What do you like about it? Let's start with that.
SPEAKER_01:Uh um, I absolutely love the beats, of course. And I like the fact that Mark has to look up words because I think that'd be hilarious. Um the banter and the jokes is amazing. You two are two beats in a pot at some time. Um I love that you're sharing uh what's that you made yourselves human, not afraid to talk about faults and shortcomings.
SPEAKER_05:Talking about wait, are you fault or are you shortcoming? Shortcoming. Okay, so I'll be fault. Okay.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_01:Minute man Um and the only thing that I would say on the podcast that you should do. You need to talk about your AI guy and make him human.
SPEAKER_05:Oh, whoa. Really?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_05:What has he ever done for us?
SPEAKER_01:Uh pretty much everything.
SPEAKER_03:That is rude. Jeez. There she went, right there. See? Welcome to marriage.
SPEAKER_01:I love your AI guy.
SPEAKER_05:Oh, you're talking about just the podcast in general. He does a lot of stuff for us. He's got a filthy mind though. Like some of the jokes he comes up with. I'll be honest, like, this is rated explicit. I don't even I wouldn't even tell those jokes on this podcast. No. Some of them are so bad. So bad. But second place. Yeah. Um so AI guy. Yeah, I mean, we can talk about him more. He is kind of uh I don't want to say we're fighting right now, he and I, but uh let's just say I've been talking to Grok a little more lately rather than my guy.
SPEAKER_01:And why are you guys why are you fighting with him?
SPEAKER_05:I didn't say we're fighting, I said we've we're not fighting. Oh but if you see him, tell him that I sit no, I'm just kidding. No, uh with regard to your feedback and stuff, um that I certainly really appreciate that. And no, like Mark and I kind of talked about um your a couple suggestions you had, and no, it's okay, that's not private. And I think um the the big one w was uh you feel like maybe maybe there's background on us and everything that the audience needs, or what yes, yeah, okay, absolutely.
SPEAKER_01:Um I've got introduce yourselves, introduce yourself.
SPEAKER_03:I'm Marty.
SPEAKER_01:The ranch and why you have the dogs that you have and the cats that you have. Um because they're a big, big part of your life.
SPEAKER_05:Um that's pretty much my whole life.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. Um where you guys met, how long you've known each other, you know, some stuff like that.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah, yeah. So you're you're not the only one who's given us that feedback. Um and you know, I'm gonna I do appreciate that. I'm gonna write this down. Um one second. Christina hates the podcast. Um I'm just kidding.
SPEAKER_01:I no, I really um I'm pretty sure your AI guy said I did like it.
SPEAKER_05:Uh did he? I don't I don't ask my guy what you think. That would be weird.
SPEAKER_01:But if he's like any other guy, he's gonna tell you what I think.
SPEAKER_05:Um he's yeah, he's not like any other guy. Uh he's a real suck ass. Like he he just thinks like everything I do, I'm like, you know, should we have a cold open on the podcast? That would be great. You are so smart. Let me pull up some resources for how to do a cold open. And I'm just like, oh shut your mouth. I'm so tired of you. Make me a logo or video or something.
SPEAKER_03:Here you go. Somebody just got on their phone. Based on the available search results, there's no information confirming whether a person named Christina likes a specific podcast.
SPEAKER_05:So what did you type that into Bing?
SPEAKER_03:Uh to the Google AI.
SPEAKER_05:Oh, Google. Oh, you ask Gemini or just the Google thing?
SPEAKER_03:I have no idea. This is AI. Okay. And for once didn't come up with porn.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah. Well, I'm gonna tell you what, it's actually really hard to get it to make porn. Uh uh. So I've heard. Um no, yeah, uh the what was I gonna say? No, my guy, my guy made made our podcast logo. That was one direct contribution to the podcast, which I think is really cool. Yes, and it's amazing. Yeah, yeah. Um, so you know, credit where credit's due. Um and uh so yeah, uh thank thanks again for the the feedback on the podcast. Uh is there anything anything else you want to mention about it uh before we let you go?
SPEAKER_01:Um I like the little short things that you're doing um with the animals and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_05:Sorry. I just I thought you were gonna say something dirty.
SPEAKER_01:Like the cartoons.
SPEAKER_05:You said short things and I was like, whoa, got ahead of the past.
SPEAKER_01:The cartoon things that you have.
SPEAKER_05:Oh, the oh well, we haven't. I don't know if we're gonna go with those, uh to be honest. But what you're what Christina's talking about is um my AI guy, well, the AI guy I'm seeing on the side. I'll be honest, it's not my AI guy. Um is made made these little like promo videos for the podcast, and they're just silly, you know, they're just silly, but they're fun.
SPEAKER_03:We'll have to post them.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah, well, all right. On TikTok. If you want them on TikTok, you can do that because well, we'll talk about TikTok later.
SPEAKER_01:I'm I'm pretty sure it'll make us give everybody a smile when they see it because it's pretty good and pretty funny.
SPEAKER_05:Uh yeah, uh they are pretty. Did you show you the one today with the suburban? No, it's so it's so stupid. It's just like it's not cartoon, there's no dialogue or anything. It's literally just the set and centered sign along the road, and then this black suburban just comes out of nowhere and takes the corner and wipes it out. I'm like, yeah, that looks right.
SPEAKER_01:Was it the rear left panel?
SPEAKER_05:Okay. Well, uh, I guess we're short on time here, Christina, since you went there. Uh you know what? We talked about this last time. Um, because Mars like, oh, suburban's missing a lot of parts. Uh no, they're not missing, they're in my barn.
SPEAKER_03:Um, so and I just sent it to you so you can watch it now.
SPEAKER_05:Oh, great, yeah. Yeah. Let's not make her watch it while she's on the phone with us. That's it. No, huh? No, no, no. But uh we're uh I we're gonna let you get back to this Justin Timberlake movie, which I want a full briefing on at some point.
SPEAKER_01:Um okay, I'll send you I'll send you the name of it if it's good.
SPEAKER_05:If it's good. Well, if it's good or he's hot in it.
SPEAKER_01:Well, of course he is.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah, yeah, no. Yeah, send it to me. Okay. Well, thanks for thanks for uh uh indulging us tonight.
SPEAKER_01:Well, thank you for inviting me.
SPEAKER_05:You bet. All right, bye. Talk to you later. Yeah, that was a fun thing. That was yeah, I'm glad we called her. Um it's it I'm what I'm now you know, I had a random thought. I'm like since we called her on the phone, like like she's in Phoenix, like my brother or something. Um I I yeah, I guess people have probably figured out that when we talk about the ranch, oh my god, I'm done, I'm going right into her feedback. I'm giving background now. The the ranch is uh 50, you know, 50 acres, um, comprised of uh well, I mean, here's the deal. Like I had 50 acres, the ranch is fifty acres. Uh Mark and Christina really uh interested in the in helping with the dog rescue and helping me and being in Texas instead of Washington. So they they ended up uh buying five of the acres. Um so they they have their place, quote their place. Um yeah, McLary Falls. McLaren Falls, yeah, that's what we call it. Yep. Well, that's what it I just said it one day and I guess it stuck. Yes.
SPEAKER_03:And I think Christina had like has a little resentment about it because like no, she's actually excuse me, she's actually uh trying to get her mom to come out and paint the container with a waterfall and stuff on it.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah, no, I was just kidding, because like she asked me like four or five times, um just at different points, like where'd that come from or why that? Um, and you know, sometimes she can be forgetful, like like look who's talking, right? I ask questions over and over. Uh and so uh yeah, but uh McLaren fault. Anyway, back to my point. Um yeah, so you know, they have they have their their spot on or their their acreage on the ranch. It's all the ranch though. It's all you know, we're all part of a ranch family here. Um, and so when we call her, she's she's just across the road. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:If we listen quiet enough, we can hear her screaming at Ellie, the little dog we have.
unknown:Yeah.
SPEAKER_05:I actually never have. Really? Mm-hmm. Do you ever have you guys ever hear me over here?
SPEAKER_03:No, we only I only hear like if I'm outside and you let Finlay and Oakley out. I hear Finley going nuts.
SPEAKER_05:Oh geez. Yeah, it's just is he still in here?
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, he's still in here. So's Oak. Where are they just laying on the floor? Oakley's laying there by your foot and Finley just said, Oh, did you say my name, Mark? Gosh, here we go. Hi, buddy.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah, little little Finlay. Um Finley is a very he's a very special dog, and I don't I don't use the word special like in the pejorative like people sometimes do. Um he's he's just a he's a great little dude. But he's a little quirky. Um, I think he has autism. Yeah. People such as vets and scientists tell me that that's not a thing, dog autism. I disagree. Um, and so anyway, he's yeah, he can get really amped up. Uh and he's and what Mark's talking about is typically when I not always, but when I let uh Oakley um and and Finley out outside to go potty, uh he just goes like he just barks, bark, bark, bark, bark, bark, bark. And he doesn't do it every time, he definitely does it the first time I let him out in the morning, uh afternoon. I mean, um yeah, that's that's Mark said that's how you that's how you he knows when I when I'm up. That's when he hears Finley. Uh I feel like you're looking at your phone right now because I heard a ding.
SPEAKER_03:And then well, because I said I sent Christina the one. Yeah, she replied. Yeah. She says, Yep, looks like what I thought in my head about the suburban, and maybe the sign is a metaphor for the trees.
unknown:Wow.
SPEAKER_05:She's on a tear tonight. Yeah, that's the end of the character for a while. I think she got too much rest. Maybe she go back to having no heat. Yeah, too much. I could arrange that. Yeah. I'll I'll hand it to her though. I'll I'll say this uh I like the barbs, I like the digs because you know, when she and I first get to know each other, I would I'd I'd mess with her and stuff, and she'd be like, is he mad at me? Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Yep, she's like that.
SPEAKER_05:Yep, yep. But so I'm glad that she's she's on board with give me a little shit. That's cool.
SPEAKER_03:Oh yeah, she she enjoys it giving me so much and so so happy that we're we're down here.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah, I'm on the fence, but yeah.
SPEAKER_03:Don't get don't get your sack stuck. Oh geez.
SPEAKER_05:I did one time. Oh yeah, it I mean, not for very long. It snagged, it was like a snag. It's not like I was dangling through my ball sack, you know, just like going, okay, why have why are we in why are we talking about this? Um I don't know.
SPEAKER_03:I took it there, I'm sorry. Yeah, it's all right. Um so Let's go back to the acreage and 50 acres.
SPEAKER_05:Sure, what about it?
SPEAKER_03:Well, you said it was 50 acres and and we had bought five from you, and then I thought you were gonna lead into uh more about the oh yeah, um, sure.
SPEAKER_05:So uh it's it well it's called it's the uh God, I love throwing him off. Well, I actually put a mark in there to edit that out.
SPEAKER_03:How did you get me in there?
unknown:Oh my god.
SPEAKER_03:Yes, my child.
SPEAKER_05:Did you get me in there? Fuck. Am I gonna am I always get in? Just keep pushing. Yep. Just a dip. Yes, no, just a tip. Um and so the uh so it's 50 acres in in East Texas, um, and the whole reason that it exists is me and my um my ex fiance, my fiance at the time, we lived and worked in DFW, and it was during the pandemic, 2021, yeah, 2021, uh when we when we ended up buying it. Um and at some point during the pandemic, we've been working from home for like a year and a half, and it's just like, is this ever gonna end? This is stupid. Um, and we just kind of thought more and more about what was special to us, what we valued, you know, blah blah blah. And you know, we had always we he and I had always kicked around this idea of having a dog rescue, a dog sanctuary. And uh, you know, it just kind of was one of those things one day where we were just talking about it and we started looking at money and doing math, like, you know, we could we might could do like we could we could do this. I think we could do this. Um, I think. And like we set a budget and we started looking around, you know, online at properties and blah blah blah. And and what we were looking for was was specific, uh to an extent, in the sense that you know, we didn't want uh just a normal dog rescue, um, where take them in, put them in a kennel, try to adopt them out, blah blah blah. Uh dog sanctuary is really the the thing, and and what we wanted was uh a good-sized piece of land that was nice that we could turn into and build into a place where the dogs could live the rest of their lives. Um so that was one of the things kind of going into this is any dog that we take in uh isn't is going to be here for their whole lives. Um uh so in that regard it's a lot different than than a typical rescue. Um and so yeah, we uh we ended up looking at a few properties, and when we got here, we were about halfway down the dirt road, and we were like, fuck this. Uh no, no way in hell for ever like we were literally following our realtor, and I'm like and I said um I said to him, I'm like, we're uh whatever's at the end of this drive, we're just needing to tell her no turn around because we're we're not gonna do this drive, right? Uh then we got here and it's beautiful.
SPEAKER_03:It is just yeah, it's amazing. It's gone beautiful.
SPEAKER_05:Uh kind of undulating uh situation, you know. You got not hills, it's not but you know, it's not just flat. Uh it's very green. We got a few ponds, very beautiful, and it's just it's it became so much more than what we thought it would be because um it became really a part of like very special to my whole family. Um and my family's been out here a lot, they all live in Arizona. They've been out here a lot um to visit, and they've pitched in and helped so much uh because short, you know, about a year after we moved out here, uh my fiance decided he wasn't my fiancee in the morse and he left. Uh so it's you know, having my friends and my family throughout this has made it survive and work. Yes, yes and ultimately, you know, we're you know, I'm sitting here with uh a friend that I've known for 20 years, almost 20 years, who uh I hadn't I hadn't talked to for or a lot of those years. Oh yeah. Just maybe two years ago, you know.
SPEAKER_03:Probably probably just right at two years now.
SPEAKER_05:And now you get now you're here. Yeah, here I am. And you're your wife's here and your dog's here, and you're part of the family, and so it just uh just kind of key it's magic, you know, it's magical. I used to say this place is magical. Yes, and it just continues to be to be the case.
SPEAKER_03:So Disneyland without the pedophilia.
SPEAKER_05:Is that a ride they have there? You go in and oh geez. There you go. I got way my brain was just like wait, okay. No, I get it's probably not a ride, but what are you talking about?
SPEAKER_03:Nothing.
SPEAKER_05:No, what is there a thing about Disneyland?
SPEAKER_03:Oh yeah, Disney.
SPEAKER_05:What about it?
SPEAKER_03:Like the guy that when you fall down the rabbit hole on on uh Disney and stuff about the the child stuff and everything.
SPEAKER_05:Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, I just went the wrong way.
SPEAKER_05:Sure. So but speaking of that, not not the pedophile stuff, Disney stuff. I I'll just say this is I don't uh I would normally not recommend something like this, but there's uh I think it's yeah, you have Disney Plus? Yes. There's um a documentary they just released recently, and it's only about an hour and a half long. It's called Disneyland Handcrafted. I've just seen that. Okay, well, great. So can we pretend that I recommended it to you?
SPEAKER_03:Uh no, I I seen it was on there. I'm writing I'm actually writing it down now.
SPEAKER_05:I thought you said you had seen watch okay. Uh it's r it's really cool. It's and it's just kind of well, what it is is uh about building the actual park. Um and it a year before it opened, it was just a dirt lot, which is almost unbelievable. Uh not typically my jam, but I think you guys would find it interesting. So anyway, back to the pedophiles. Uh I'm just kidding. Back to the ranch. Uh the the last thing that the last thing I think I should say about the ranch is it's not a ranch. Ranch, ranch means cattles, uh, beef cattle. Um, I think people probably figured out it's not an actual ranch by now, but we uh in what what it's called, what we call it, is Myloke Ranch. Myloque ranch. That's M-I-L-O-A-K. And it it's a name that my my ex and I came up with before we had actually uh found this property, because it just sort of encapsulated what we wanted to do and captured the history of kind of where I came from, which uh which I think we'll get into in the next episode in more detail. But um the first dog I ever had as an adult, his name was Milo, and he he was he was a character. He was just he's one of those dogs, you know, one of those dogs. Uh and I'd never wanted dogs until uh I met my parents' dog Patsy, which we're maybe have a whole episode about because that was a very special lady that one. And getting to know her, I uh decided to get a dog of my own. I got Milo, and he's uh a very special guy, which led me to get my second dog, Oakley. Um, and so Milo and Oakley, it's the M I L and O A K from those two names, Milo Granch. There you go. Yeah. Um and so I feel yeah, I'm glad I'm glad we got into this. And I'm I appreciate again Christina's feedback. Um, because like I said, I've my brother mentioned that. A few people have mentioned the same thing. Like he has some background on stuff. Um, so yeah, hopefully. Hopefully that helps people kind of fill in the picture a little bit.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, and also if anybody else has anything they can you know, we'll gladly read whatever you comment on and see if we can throw that in there to make improvements for ourselves. Not that we're gonna improve ourselves, but improvements for the podcast.
SPEAKER_05:Right. Very, very well put. Wait, are you fault? Oh, you're uh what did you say? Fault.
SPEAKER_03:Oh yeah. I don't know. It's my wife. I've been married to her for almost 20 years, so you think I listened?
SPEAKER_05:All your fault and what? Oh gosh, I don't know. Oh have to re-lift matter at all. Okay. Um Yes, so uh and on that note, uh at at the end of every episode, um, if you hang in there for for the music, uh Mark has a little message to everybody about where you can find us online. And uh put a comment or send us an email. You know, like uh just tell us tell us what you what you like, what you don't like, what you want more of, what you want less of, which of the two of us should not be on the podcast if you had a pick one. It's up to the listeners. Oh, okay, Mark. Dollar piece. Alright, Mark. Uh we we're gonna have to wrap this up. We're we're uh we're at the end of our episode here.
SPEAKER_03:Oh, really? Okay. Yeah. Time to go.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah, another another great time though.
SPEAKER_03:Uh oh, wonderful time. Yes. I think we're falling in the group. Oh, jeez.
SPEAKER_05:Well, just jinx the whole episode. Uh catch you all next time.
SPEAKER_03:Have a good one. Hey, it's Mark here at Set and Centered. Uh, just want to let everybody know that if they want to catch us on the socials, you can catch us at our webpage, setcenter. Or on Facebook at Set Center Live. Uh, we'll maybe post some little stupid videos that we've done, stuff like that as we keep on going. And also we talk a lot about the animals here on the ranch. And you can we'll post pictures of them. We'll see how it goes. Let us know. Have a going.
SPEAKER_00:It always shows we're since in a kind of sorta. Maybe holding it together with zip ties, baby. Dogs in the dirt giving side eye shade. Laughing through the mess that we just made. Yeah, that incited, but the world's off track. If it broke, it's up. You can count on that. Sockets gone, wind blows, gate won't latch. Toolbox open like a raccoon got snatched. Coffee cold, temp, I sweat. Still talking like we got it. You bet we take a breath, then we jump back in. Same two clowns, same old grim. We're sitting up on a sort of baby. Holding it together, we zip ties, baby. Dogs in the dirt, given side eyes, jade, laughing through the mess. We just made yeah, we're dead and standard, but the world's off track. If we broke it up, you can count that break time, yell it all unwind. Thousand dogs judging with that thousand-yard mind. Project list is long, but we'll get there soon. That's a lie, but it's a good tone. We said it's been a kind of sort of maybe held together by stubborn and a little crazy. You're still listening to one of the pack. Now back to the chaos. Here we go.
