We kick off the first run of Save It For Swing Shift by chasing two kinds of chaos: the grand opening of Arizona’s first Buc-ee’s and a very real QVC fixation that turns “background TV” into a shopping strategy. Along the way, we end up talking traffic control, brisket sandwiches, impulse buys, and why TikTok Live feels like QVC with a faster heartbeat.
• Arizona’s first Buc-ee’s opening and why it becomes a local event
• Police-managed detours and the four-mile loop to reach the parking lot
• Inside-the-store overload from food counters to soda fountains
• The brisket sandwich redemption story and the beaver nuggets haul
• QVC as comfort viewing and the hosts and products that hook us
• Easy Pay, Today’s Special Value, and how pricing changes behavior
• Scarcity, real-time dashboards, and the “mission control” feel of live sales
• TikTok Live shopping drops and why the format is basically QVC 2.0

Mic Clap And Cold Open
SPEAKER_00Okay, so now I'm the one that's doing the oh the intro. Yes. I just need you to let me know when to go. Can you clap for me?
SPEAKER_03Uh yeah. Well, okay. There you go. Uh what? Didn't hear anything. Did you clap? No, well. Yeah, hold on. I didn't do it in front of the mic. There we go. There's a clap, buddy. I'm having a bad palm day. Sorry. Bad palm day. Well, sometimes they sometimes they're just not there for it, you know. Would you have too much jurgins? Jurg jergins? Maybe not enough. Oh, you know, that's not enough. I think maybe they're too dry because you get a little they call it stiction. What's I call an engineering sticktion? Actually, that's not true at that point.
SPEAKER_00That's never that's not a phrase at all.
SPEAKER_03Okay, it is, first of all. It actually is a thing in engineering sticktion. Uh, but it's not the one that I meant to do. More like a, you know, like if you have soap on your skin, you look like to where you great. So you can't hear me clap, so we can't use that.
SPEAKER_00That's the word that they came up with, though, is sticktion.
SPEAKER_03No, I was saying like that used it incorrectly, but it is actually I know, but I'm I'm saying engineers came up with that term.
SPEAKER_00We're not very creative. Brightest and brilliant brilliant minds came up with sticktion. We're not very creative.
SPEAKER_03Uh look, you want Jesus Christ. Look, you want some fucking ball bearing designed? Cool. You want to have a great name?
SPEAKER_00No, sorry. You want to put a man on the moon? We gotcha. Wants to make cool names for shit? Sorry, can't help you. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Uh in fact, we can go one better. Uh we can put a man on the moon with a fucking car if you want, so he can drive around.
SPEAKER_00That was totally faked. Staged phony.
Welcome And Buc-ee’s Hits Arizona
SPEAKER_00Hold on, I gotta check which podcast I'm on. Okay, let's get this thing going. All right. Three, two, one. Welcome everyone to our inaugural podcast, uh, first episode of Save It for the Swing Shift. My name's Rob, and my co-host RJ.
SPEAKER_03It's already a little disgruntled because it's not called Save It for the Swing Shift. It's called Save It for Swing Shift.
SPEAKER_00All right. So patent pending. Copyright. I don't know. Um, all right. So I've been wanting to talk to you about this for the last couple days. Um it's huge news out here, dude. Um, it's it's old news for you, but we just had our first Bucky's location open up Buckeyes on uh Monday. Buckeys. The first one in Arizona? First one in Arizona, yeah. It was uh it's like 15 minutes from our house, 15-20 minutes from our house. Nice. And it's been just nothing but circuit. I mean, it's been all over the news. It's it's located right off the I-10, like a major um I guess like uh junction point and a couple of major freeways, and so it's it's just been absolute fucking chaos for the last four days. I I believe that.
SPEAKER_03And it's not really gonna get any better.
SPEAKER_00That's what I've been hearing from other people too. It's like get used to it. This is okay, so we actually I don't know why, because when this thing started, I told Jamie, I'm like, anytime these new places, especially a place like Bucky's, opens up, it's like you gotta wait at least a month for things to kind of settle down so the hype isn't so crazy. And uh somehow she convinced me, even though we agreed to that, she convinced me that uh we should go yesterday. So we went after work. And it's been open like three days at this point.
unknownYep.
SPEAKER_00Oh, you went after working rush hour.
unknownYeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so here check this out. This is this is what makes it absolutely insanity. So it's la located off of a a road called Bullard, which in that area that it's in historically isn't a very busy road, but over the years it's developed into this major industrial park. So it's pretty well built up to support the amount of people go commuting in and out for work at these major warehouses and factories and shit. So they we we take the exit off I-10 to go to Bucky's, it's right there, right off the freeway, and you could easily just make a left-hand turn into the into their parking lot, right? They had the whole road completely closed off and cordoned off to where you couldn't turn right, couldn't turn left. You go straight for four and a half fucking miles in a line of with all these other people, directed by police,
Police Detours And Traffic Madness
SPEAKER_00and then they turn you around and go all the way back up to Bucky's, and the whole fucking road is shut down, covered with uh construction uh uh barriers and all kinds of shit with cops every at every fucking uh interchange, every intersection, and um strictly to to manage the volume of traffic for Buckeys. It's absolutely insane. I've never seen anything like it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, uh I mean that's insane even for Buckeys, I gotta say. Um that's kind of next level. Um now the Buckeys is always it's always gonna be crazy. Uh well well to quote one of my favorite QVC hosts, uh it's Banana Town. Uh always. Um that's what happens if they have a really hot, you know, like set of kitchen shears that are just flat out the door. Um he's like, it's Banana Town and uh QVC's still around, by the way. That's still a thing. Yeah. Holy shit. That's amazing. Um, you know, I I don't want to uh not change the subject, but you remember the other night we were talking about like kind of slow, like a slow TV, slow videos, like the concrete thing, you know? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's kind of like that for me sometimes. It's a little just yeah, you don't have to pay attention. You know, whatever. But it's always it's live 24-7, 360, four days a year. And so it's always just there, yeah.
SPEAKER_00What what's the 365th day? They take Christmas off.
SPEAKER_03No shit.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. That's it. That's it.
SPEAKER_03So but they Thanksgiving pre-re They're on. Yes. They pre-record a 24 hours of programming for Christmas, though. So are you fucking kidding me? I'm not. These people are insane. And that's part of what I think is like kind of fun about it. Kind of like like I said, background entertaining. Um, it's like, yeah, these people their their shift starts at 3 30 in the morning and they're selling shoes or whatever. Uh but anyway, back to the back to the buckies. Um Okay, yeah, let's let's bring it back. Yeah, so okay. So you got in there? Um so what Yeah, we get we got in. You yeah. So this this is, I guess. I was gonna say this is the difference between someone who has a family and doesn't kids and a wife and stuff. Or maybe the difference between somebody who chooses not to and somebody who chooses to. Because I'd be like, fuck. I would have said fuck this before you can get in the car, but Yeah, well, so if you get married, you don't have a lot of a lot of choices. Yeah. How long did it take to get in there?
SPEAKER_00Um from what point? From the time that we left our house or from the house. No, let's say like from the time you got in queue. Uh from the time that we got in queue? Oh, it wasn't too bad actually. Maybe ten minutes.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Yeah. So do y'all have Chick-fil-A's out there? Oh, yeah. Alright. So this this sounds like a Chick-fil-A situation, which is an unbelievable amount of people in cars. Well-oiled machine. Like they know how to fucking get it done.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah, they they definitely had it. I mean, it it was so crazy uh as far as like the amount of traffic going through there. I one of the things I picked up on is they had some passenger vans, those like um 15 passenger vans, set off into like a lot behind the Bucky's parking lot, and there was employees standing out there with like bags and stuff. I'm like, holy shit, they're actually trucking their employees in and out of the facility because they don't have enough parking for their own employees.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, oh my gosh. Uh okay, yeah, see, that's next level even for Buckys. Because I mean, I like I saw you sent a video, a reel or something the other day of like people at the you know, when it opens so because there's different sizes of buckies. This looks like a big Bucky's, like a normal size. It's huge, yeah. And so the parking lot is going to be absolutely massive, right? And still, yeah, they have to have to bust their people in. Yeah, I mean it's like a hundred like a hundred and fifty pumps or something, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think ours, Jamie said it was a hundred and ten. Oh my gosh. Yeah. Just insane. So well, did you have fun? Yeah, I was I mean, well, I didn't I in hindsight, yeah. But in at the time, I was like, get me the fuck out of here.
SPEAKER_03Ugh, yes. Uh this reminds me of uh well a number of stories, but one in particular, like when when uh Robbie was here at the ranch and he wanted to do fireworks and a drone or whatever, and it was July, and like it was hot, and there's mosquitoes, and like hit my head on the tailgate on the truck, and he didn't care about that, and like lost the remote, and he didn't care about that either. And I'm just like, I'm sweating, I'm getting bit. Like fucking, it was and I'd put it in the same category. It was fucking miserable, and I loved it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, that's exactly what I mean. It it's uh it was it was like this morning. I'm like, I wonder if maybe I could afford to swing by this morning on my way into work to grab some breakfast just to try their breakfast food. I was like, nah, nah, that's that's just insanity.
SPEAKER_03But yeah. Depends on depends on timing. But uh yeah, I was actually gonna ask you if you have had their um like their brisket tacos. No, that's
Brisket Sandwiches And A $250 Stop
SPEAKER_03no, I didn't even know that they had them until Jamie mentioned them. They have so they have everything. I mean, they've got like um they got like the made to order section, you know, you can order something, whatever, but then they got like another area where they're just constantly pumping out like fresh hot food. And like if you want, uh like if you want to, I just it was just made brisket taco, like you can stand there and they'll be like, they'll make one for you, or you can just grab one of the 700 that are right there that were made three minutes ago. I mean the amount of shit that they pump out of that place, and god, like their soda fountains, there's like 75 sodas. I mean, it's just yeah, everything is just off the charts with that place.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's just yeah, I I the way that like if anybody ever asks me what is Bucky's like, it's almost as if a group of really rich Texans got together and said, you know, QT and Maverick, let's do that, but like Texas.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, uh I don't know. I don't know what Maverick is, but yeah, QT. Um, well, and then I mean they did a lot of different stuff too. Like uh yeah, they dialed it up to like 11 or Texas, but then they um and they well they pay their people really well. I'm sure you see the signs around there. Like, yeah, you want to be a fucking bathroom, you know, mob slopper, $27 an hour.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. I was like, fuck, maybe I should fucking quit my job.
SPEAKER_03That's worth thinking about. And like that would be the kind of job too, that it would just fly by.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah. No matter what you did in that place. Not have to take anything home with you either. You know, it's just like when you walk out, you're done. Well, you do take some beaver nuggets home, probably. I mean, that's it though. Yeah, so you it's only good shit, you know? Yeah. Speaking of which, we we left with two bags of beaver nuggets. So the whole intention of this trip was to go get dinner, right? $250 later, we had a very nice meal in the truck on the way home. Had uh brisket sandwiches, which were spectacular. I it's funny because everybody's always uh raved about the brisket sandwiches, and the first time that you took me in Texas, I got a brisket sandwich, and I was just kinda it was it didn't didn't really, you know, uh didn't really knock my socks off, right? Yeah. But this this one I was like, holy shit, that's what everybody's talking about. So I must have got got a bad sandwich for some reason the first time around. But yeah, we got sandwiches, we got some chicken and fries for the boys, we got uh probably 12 pounds of candy. Um I mean, yeah, everybody got their own soda. It was, yeah, we spent a fuckload of money. Oh, and then you know, Robbie had to obviously get a $40 pair of sunglasses for God knows why. He's only got 17 other pairs, and uh Kai got a like an animatronic stuffed animal Bucky, and uh we got some shirts for the family for the Fourth of July.
SPEAKER_03Uh that's pretty uh that's a pretty good pretty good haul, pretty good run.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I think the thing with that brisket sandwich in Texas was because if that was your very first trip out here, I think excuse me, you were loaded up with a to-go meal by my ex. Uh and probably either had just eaten that or had eaten was eating it on the way, I don't know. But like, apart from that one first breakfast here, which was like uh are we all split in one egg? Um he definitely kept that dude can cook. He definitely kept you all well well filled. Um yeah. So did uh did Robbie lose his ski his ski goggle sunglasses, his blue blockers?
SPEAKER_00His his uh yeah, what are you what are they called? Uh it's like douche douche shades or something like that. Yeah. I don't I think yeah, I think he either lost them, I think he broke them actually, because Jamie, for whatever reason, decided to get some for him, for me, and so he broke his first pair, and then he's like, Dad, can I have yours? I'm like, Yeah, I'm not fucking wearing these. I'll kick my own ass. So I gave him mine, and I haven't seen them in months actually, now that I think about it.
SPEAKER_03Well, uh they must be lost because it's I mean, something that size is pretty hard to get tucked under a bed or behind a couch or something.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Well, he's got a new pair. They're not as douchey, but they're up there.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03Uh I believe you on the not as douchey
How QVC Became Must Watch
SPEAKER_03part.
SPEAKER_00Uh I wanna I want to go back to this QVC thing though, real quick, because I was not aware that my my brother is apparently a 65-year-old woman. How's that how did that come to pass? I'm surprised.
SPEAKER_03I'm as surprised I'm I'm what you didn't know this? Uh uh. No, I mean I I don't know how it all started, the QVC thing. But uh it's real I I've I've I haven't watched it in actually a really long time, to to be honest. But yeah, I'd say further probably like the last 15 years I've watched it.
SPEAKER_00Fifteen fucking years? Yeah, forgot yeah. Oh my god. Wow. Okay, okay, so how how much stuff have you bought off QVC?
SPEAKER_03Uh an amount that's unreasonable but not embarrassing.
SPEAKER_00Like for the co for the course of 15 years of using it to lull yourself to sleep, it's probably like understandable.
SPEAKER_03Oh no, let's let's back up. I don't use it to lull myself to sleep. I actively watch QVC. Oh my god. Uh-huh. Uh yeah, I would say it's I stand by my answer. I would say it's unreasonable, but not embarrassing.
SPEAKER_00What's your favorite purchase then? What's your favorite purchase from QVC to date?
SPEAKER_03My favorite purchase from QVC is um probably my Dyson. Vacuum? Yeah. That stick vacuum that I have that Jamie couldn't figure out how to use? The one that where the battery lasts about four minutes. Allegedly. Um I never had that problem. But uh Yeah, got a smoking, smoking fucking deal on that thing. And that was fuck. That's pushing these eight years, probably. I mean Wow. Yeah. Um they have really good kitchenware stuff. Um, but and they have a lot of stuff that you can't really find anywhere else. Um, and a lot of it is just like gimmicky gadgety shit, which I'm not into. But like uh I think I made a joke about kitchen shears earlier. Um one of the most useful things I've ever bought from QVC was a three-piece set of Sabatier 7 and 1 multi-purpose kitchen shears with included sharpener. Because I I have a one of those stuck to my fucking fridge, and I I use those things like almost every day. Pop them out to I got one in my toolbox, I got one somewhere else.
SPEAKER_00Um those fucking scissors that you have all over the place that have like their own sheath? Yeah, the red ones. I've never oh wow.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Yeah. Uh and they're you know, you can cut through a shoe. Believe me, I've seen them do it.
SPEAKER_00Um never tried it yourself though?
SPEAKER_03Didn't need to. I I trust UBC.
SPEAKER_00They did it. That's a quality network, okay? They're not they're not selling snake oil. It is.
SPEAKER_03You know what the Q stands for? Quality.
SPEAKER_00Is that what it is? Quality, what's the V? Value. Channel. Okay, got it. No quality, value channel. No? Quality, value, convenience. No fucking the C is not channel.
SPEAKER_03No, it's not channel.
SPEAKER_00Because everybody calls it the QVC channel.
SPEAKER_03Uh I don't know if they do or not. I think most people just call it QBC.
SPEAKER_00Or is it just the QVC?
SPEAKER_03No, QBC.
SPEAKER_00QBC.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Okay. Um I'll tell you what. I'll tell you what slop I do not watch. Okay. HSN. Fucking amateur hour over there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I mean, you think after all these years of being a competitor that they would have stepped their game up, right?
SPEAKER_03It's so funny you say that because you would. But they didn't. And you know what happened? QBC bottom.
SPEAKER_00Um, okay, so that makes me think of another question is wouldn't that mean that QVC has a monopoly over the TV purchasing channels then? The good stuff. The big ones.
SPEAKER_03Purchasing channels. Well, no, nobody's calling me just and good. Let's just be clear about that. Um but there I would love like the flagship ones. Yeah, I guess. Then there may be new ones, I don't know. But there was like, you know, there are a million of these stupid things. You remember jewelry TV? Remember fucking jewelry TV? Uh I don't know. Are you really?
SPEAKER_00Is that the the one where they were buying fucking like loads of like like emeralds and shit? Like, oh, we just bought a pack of 60 emeralds today. Uh our parents? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I I don't remember I don't remember satchels of gems, but I I specific I remember that there was a there was a phase uh where j JTV, as they call it, um was often on TV and you know, they they would order the things somewhat regularly. I don't but but that uh there's stuff like that. And I remember about jewelry TV, like it was just and the stuff, you know, like mom is no peasant when it comes to these things. So it had to put in good stuff. But it was like the it was like remember when HD can channels started coming out, and then you like every now and then you flip to an S D channel, you're like, Oh god, oh my eyes. Yeah. That's how jewelry TV always looks.
unknownLike, Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but everywhere HSN.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, HSN was terrible. Um, just like it's low rent, low, low budge, white trash, fucking oh yeah, JTV's still a thing. Um yeah, and QVC, like, you know, they bought them and I don't know. They probably integrated back ends and whatever, but they they kind of let HSN, I think, at least last time I checked in on it, they let HSN kind of do its own thing. Um like stick to their swim lane, right? Yeah, which is kind of grody and icky. It's like it's the it's the lane where you know the old people warm up in their water aerobics before they open it for general admission. Uh yeah. Ooh, I can use the code June app through 1159. Sorry. Um I so I'll uh I am uh I'm nothing if not professional and objective, though. I'll give you I'll give you the other side of the coin with QBC. Um it you know pound for pound or whatever, um it's generally really expensive. So if you you know you never buy you never just buy a thing that you can buy kind of anywhere else on QBC.
SPEAKER_00So that's why they offer the installment plans, right?
SPEAKER_03Uh what they do. Um they call it easy pay, and you can get out the most easy pays you can do six easy pays, that's when they really go the balls out, and you get out six easy pays. And it's it's really funny because they people are so stupid, because like they'll have a a set of pans or whatever, and it'll be like, I don't know, a hundred and twenty dollars, and so it'll say $120 on there, and not so small that it's you know, I would say false advertising, but smaller than the $20. Just $20, 20, 20 easy pays, and then what that's good for. All it takes to get this home is $20. And
Easy Pay Psychology And Best Purchases
SPEAKER_03that is that is true. That's the first step.
SPEAKER_00Uh that's a Halloween hook you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but like, so you know, item for item, they're expensive, but they're not just not like everything's expensive. I'm just saying, like, if you if there's something that Amazon has and something QVC has, you don't want to buy it on QVC. Um, but things like some of their in-house brands, like Lock and Lock, um, for example, it's the only place you can get killer fucking screaming deals on lock and lock. What lock lock and lock? Yeah, lock and lock. It's uh it's the um absolutely the best uh plastic storageware um brand that you'll ever encounter. Um from it. Tupperware. Uh yeah, a Tupperware competitor. That's what people would call it. Um Tupperware. Yeah, it's the best fucking shit. Um like high quality. It's uh it's airtight, watertight, uh fridge safe, freezer safe, microwave safe, dishwasher safe, um, and just the best. No parabens?
SPEAKER_00I don't know, I don't know what that is, but is it parabin and and uh plastic plastic scene spree?
SPEAKER_03I don't know. Don't care. Okay. It's fantastic.
SPEAKER_00You know what annoys me since you since you brought it up? People that that use the fucking glass version of Tupperware now. Hmm. Why why do you have a problem with that? I don't I don't know. It's like, yeah, let's take my Pyrex dish to fucking work. Like, leave that shit at home, dog. Like what the whole point of of uh Tupperware is not only to lock and seal your food, but to make it relatively manageable to carry with you instead of a fucking vase full of lasagna.
SPEAKER_03Hmm. Uh I can I kinda I'll tell you what I would find really irritating about this, and I don't think that's gonna surprise you. Um it would be too clanky for me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's a good point. Like I would be I'd be worried about it all the fucking time. Like it breaking.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Oh, the good stuff you don't gotta worry about typically. Um I wouldn't worry about that either. I would just be so annoyed by the clanking. We walk in and clink, clink, clink, clink, clank.
SPEAKER_00Do you do you have do you have glass Tupperware?
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_00You said the good stuff wouldn't do that. It doesn't. Well how would you know?
SPEAKER_03Oh I'm not it's not like I've never had these things. Um I have I do have a few pieces of it. I don't use um because again, the clanks, I can't handle it. Um but yeah. Uh yeah, to me, I get I get your point on that. I think it's just like it's a little, you know, a little bougie. I'm like, I'm it's a little pretentious. It's like, oh we're both we're both gonna have our uh our little tuna salads. Well mine's mine's container just a little bit better than yours.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, yeah. It's like those bento boxes. Don't even get me started on that. Oh my god, yeah, I completely agree with you on that one. I mean uh some of the slots are big enough for um like two snow peas.
SPEAKER_03I don't even know what the bento box is. I just know that it's a thing that uh TikTok women probably hawk. It's like, oh you gotta get this pentho box and have your lunch in the pental box.
SPEAKER_00Oh, you know what? Okay, so there's there's this interesting thing on social media specific specifically with TikTok, where it's almost like these women, these stay-at-home wives and moms, are like secretly competing with each other at who's the better stay-at-home wife, because they'll do like this pack pack my husband's lunch with me. And like, you know, the first one started off with here's some yogurt and some oats and you know, a couple bottles of water, and a couple sandwiches for lunch with a bag of chips and some carrots for a snack, and maybe a cheese stick and a soda, right? Like, perfect, great amount of food, right? Okay there's then there's these other bitches that start doing the same thing. It's like they're fucking like souvieing fucking steaks for them. Like this one bitch made like four hamburgers for her husband, and then like a bowl of cereal in a glass fucking Tupperware thing, mind you, and then she's like putting like all these different things together, like literally $65 worth of shit. And it's like, I'm sorry, is he going off to war or is he going to go work for 10 hours? Like, this is an absurd amount of food. You're just jealous. A little bit.
SPEAKER_03I I don't know what angle you're coming from on like being annoyed by these things. I will say Well, it's just the competitive thing. Okay.
SPEAKER_00It's not annoyed, it's yeah.
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah. I would say for my part, um I would just find them kind of gross because it's performative. Um it's very performative. Yeah, yeah. And you know, you listen to Set and Center. You know how I feel about TikTok. Uh I big fan. Just big fan. Just can't. I mean, because I'm already my blood pressure is growing going up, actually, thinking about it. You open the app and it starts playing a video. Like, how are people okay with this?
SPEAKER_00I oh it takes some getting used to.
SPEAKER_03Accidentally for a second, I clicked on the QVC live stream on my computer. I'm definitely I I turned it off right away because I'm like, I'm gonna get in trance. I tell you something else I love about QVC. So they have this thing called today's special value, and it's a daily thing that they have. Um, you know, they pick a product, an item, and uh it's promoted throughout the whole 24 hours. So on all the different shows and whatever, and like usually is a really, really good price on whatever it is. Um almost always it's very here's one thing I will say about QBC too, is the Q is the Q is legit. Like QBC does not sell crap. So that's one major upside. Quality products. Huh? Quality products, yeah, yeah. So that's one major upside, and especially in the world of Amazon, right? Where it's like you know, I want to get, I'm just looking at my desk, a random thing. I want I want to get a s a pack of steno pads, and there's like, oh yeah, Qing Pong Ling, you know, got seven reviews, and get this can't find anything. You never know what you're gonna get. So that's one upside. But uh today's special value. And it's actually really interesting. Uh I guess maybe just to me. But uh so the What is it?
SPEAKER_00Jesus Christ. This is the biggest preamble for probably a mug that I've ever heard. I already explained what it is. It's a thing that what is it? No, but what's the product that's the daily the daily value? It's different every day. Okay, but what's the daily value today? Oh, today? You you saw it. I guarantee you you saw it, so just come out with it.
SPEAKER_03Logo Principles by Lori Goldstein, two-pack elbow sleeve tees.
SPEAKER_00And how many did you order?
SPEAKER_03It's a women's clothing thing. I didn't order any of them. Um I need to tell you. The fact that you've read that off. It's right in front of me. Um well, let's see what uh see what they're doing.
SPEAKER_00Am I not entertaining enough for you to have this conversation that you have to turn on QVC?
SPEAKER_03I didn't turn on QVC. I went to the website, and then like I said, I accidentally clicked on the live stream, and they're talking about the today's special value. Um which you can get on three easy pays, um, just FYI. But um no, here here's something that's legitimately interesting about the today's special value is um it's a 24-hour thing, okay. And so and a lot of times it's let's say medium-sized businesses. Um it'll be you know, uh sometimes exclusives with QVC, whatever. But like uh like let's say a barbecue place that makes racks of ribs and ships them, right? Like they'll have uh they'll have today's special value for that. Like, yeah, I don't know two racks of ribs, four rack of ribs, whatever here's the price, usually pretty good price. But the thing is the per like the owner of the business, or or at least a representative of the business, ha they have them on every presentation of today's special value that runs for 24 hours. Which means that this person, like this barbecue joint owner, is on probably at least every 30 minutes for 24 hours presenting this product for 24 hours, yeah. It's just fascinating. Like it's it's crazy because like and they do it, like you can tell sometimes. They get into that like 20th hour, and they're like, oh boy, because it's not the same QVC folks all day, right? You got a new host every two hours, but that's the same person, and you can tell they're just like just by the fucking ribs, come on, man.
SPEAKER_00Trying
Scarcity Tactics And Real-Time Selling
SPEAKER_00to hawk them at that point, like, geez, please.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, please, and I don't I don't know the thing behind like the thing behind why they very specifically do it, but they do very specifically do that, and I think part of it is like, you know, we're gonna we're gonna give you a whole day, right? Uh in exchange for a good price on this thing, and your ass is gonna be there to instill the confidence.
SPEAKER_00Interesting. So is the ribs thing like legit or is that just an arbitrary example?
SPEAKER_03Oh, it's legit. They here's another thing. They sell dude, they sell food on QVC. Um a lot of it actually. And it's fucking crazy. Well, yeah. And it's it's all gonna be stuff that you can't get anywhere else, generally. Um and it's usually like pretty it's usually like pretty cool stuff, like you know, like uh like okay, I'm going, I'm I'm here, food and wine, meat and poultry. I'm gonna see what they have right now. But it is, it's like typically um like they have this one thing, these crab cakes, and this is crab that like off the coast of Maine, it's the only place where they do the crabs off the coast of Maine or whatever, and it's the only company that does this. So, you know, like three times a year they have like this amazing pack, they call them pack ups. This pack up of crab, you know, whatever. Uh so yeah, you can get Rostelli's ten counts, six ounce premium pork ribeye steaks with Tuscan butter. Uh is one thing they have for sale right now. I'm telling you what, it doesn't sound that big of a deal for 10 pork ribeye steaks. Those motherfuckers are gonna be good.
SPEAKER_00This is mind-blowing to me. One, the amount of shit that they sell, but two how knowledgeable and immersed you are in this shit. It's crazy. Oh.
SPEAKER_03I have my favorite hosts, um, not the calm presenters, um, and I have ones I don't really care for that much. Um and yeah, so and they have uh the kitchen shows are always the best ones. Ooh, kitchen clearance. The kitchen shows are always the best ones. Um if you wanted like an entry point into I feel like you're probably not looking for one. But if you did, but I mean, yeah, totally. Let me tell you something though, since we're talking about this, don't don't turn this thing on in front of Jamie. You'll be broke. Okay. Yeah, because they have a really good stuff.
SPEAKER_00I mean you can't get much worse than zero, right?
SPEAKER_03True. Uh but because they have really good stuff and they know how to sell it too. Like there. And I I bought a lot of things of QC over the years, but like I said, non-excessive. But like even as a veteran, seasoned veteran, I would say. Like, here's what happens is you turn it on, and you're like, oh, what's today's special value? It's like, oh, it's uh it's an area rug, you know? And you're like, yeah, whatever, that's stupid. I don't need a fucking area rug. And three hours later, you're like, I wonder if the red one would look good behind the back door. You're measuring. In fact. Okay. You know that big blue poofy poofy rug I have behind my back door? You had you said you had the same one.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03That's a QBC rug. Oh. Then you don't have the same one, you got the low RAM version. But I probably you motherfucker, you son of a bitch. But no, that was one of those things where I'm like, stupid rugs. Whatever. Because I'm always disappointed when they're not talking about something interesting. You know, cut to an hour and a half later, and I'm like, I think the 37-inch one will work.
SPEAKER_00Um You started to take measurements.
SPEAKER_03Yes. And then they like, they're like, well, if you want it in blue, it's all right. You know, we only have 17 that left of those. I'm like, oh man, I wanted it in blue, but I don't want to.
SPEAKER_00Okay. So they're they're creating not only exclusivity, but as they're creating scarcity as well. They're pretty good.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's in that I will say in their defense, that's not like their shtick with everything every time. Um, but boy, when when they got a winner, it's like because they have oh, here's another fascinating thing about QVC. They have like uh a mission control, and not just the production side to run you know the channel, but they have like a mission control with real-time stats, like on all these products, right? And like, so they're seeing like okay, who's put who's putting in their cart right now, how many are in the cart right now, how many are checking out, how many are sold, how many are left in blue, how many are left in there? And they will literally, I'm not even kidding, like they'll sit there and be like every time, every time David like opens the the little clasp lid on this thing and closes it and explains that, we sell 500 more. So have them do that a couple more times.
SPEAKER_00It's like getting CNN's real projections on election night.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, but it it's like it's seriously, it's like real time. And then and then they'll uh and sometimes this sh the stuff will just start flying out the fucking door, like and they st they pull it off the table. So if they have a table of like, I don't know, let's say they're selling uh uh whisks. I bought a really good whisk on there one time. Um selling whisk, and they got like eight colors, right? Like, oh, and sea foam green is gone, and they take like they literally don't pull the display off, take it off screen, like it's gone.
SPEAKER_00Throw it across the room.
SPEAKER_03That's fantastic. It's usually not that lively, but sometimes, I guess back to where it came up, sometimes it's banana town.
SPEAKER_00Wow. Well, I mean, they have started
TikTok Live Shopping Goes Full QVC
SPEAKER_00doing similar things on TikTok where they have TikTok auctions.
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm. You told me about it.
SPEAKER_00Well, not TikTok, well, not TikTok auctions, but TikTok live uh sales events. So like um Jamie's into like, you know, collecting uh like Stanley type cups. Recently she's more into Hydro Jug, and they were doing this release where Hydro Jug I don't know, has another what can we hide what Hydro Jug? Hide Hydro Jug, yeah. Okay, what the hell is that? It's basically a Stanley with a folding straw so it doesn't leak.
SPEAKER_03I'm still not hundred percent sure what a Stanley is after all this time, but big big thermos cup thing, right? Yeah, but they have like a twist on lid that's a good one. You know what, by the way? Sorry to cut you off. You should mention this to Jamie after you get on. No, hold on. Yeah. You'll you'll like this. Okay. Uh oh yeah, Ryan. Brian said the thing about he didn't know what the Stanley Cup is, and then he said, you know how I would know? So if she'd followed through on her promise to get me one.
SPEAKER_00Oh, it's still sitting in the garage waiting for you. You just have to ship it to you.
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay. Never mind. I take it back. What were we saying? Yeah. Hydro plug jugs?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Hydro jugs. So apparently they also have an apparel line called Acta, and so they were doing this new release on TikTok. So it was a it was like an early release on TikTok where it was a combo of hydro jug cups and some acta apparel. And she was working and was very adamant that she got some of these items that were releasing early on TikTok. So I spent an hour and a half with my phone on TikTok while working to make sure that I got those items for her. But it's very comparable to the QVC because they have a little clock there, and they'll they have like a list of an agenda or an itinerary of all the different products that they're going to be releasing, um, and what time, and then there's different colors, and then the girls that are doing the live stream, they're you know trying on all the different apparel and flashing the cups and showing how cool they are and talked about all the cool little features. So it's very QVC-esque, I would say, by TikTok standards.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it sounds like it. Um I have to assume since it's TikTok that the the urgency and the scarcity is really dialed up though.
SPEAKER_00Big time, yeah. They're not like screaming, you know, they're not like, oh my god, but you know, when something's hot, man, it it goes quick, you know. And I got those quick fingers, so a one-person thing.
SPEAKER_03Like it's just one person doing it, or like it depends.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Like the the couple that I've watched, it's usually a couple people, usually females that are you know talking about the products and stuff. So, you know, because you have you have a live chat that's also like asking questions that they're addressing, you know, in real time and stuff, or you'll say, Oh, can you try on the the pullover? I want to see how that looks, you know, and I'm about the same size as you and stuff like that. I'm like, no, you're not, Bethany. Shut up, you know.
SPEAKER_03Uh coup a couple things. First thing, when you said acta, I thought you meant the Elameda Corridor Transportation Authority. So I didn't know that that was uh clothing line. Second thing is the uh one thing they do on QVC is like, because you know it it's live, you know, so they've got earpieces, right? And so they'll be like, oh, hold on, and they'll hold the finger up there. Okay, I'm being told the gravy boat in yellow is uh down to only 12 units left. This just in fantastic.
SPEAKER_00Oh
Wrap-Up And Theme Song
SPEAKER_00my gosh. Okay, well, we spent, I think, close to 50 minutes just talking about your obsession with QVC.
SPEAKER_03Not an obsession. Maybe uh Okay.
SPEAKER_00Continue It's definitely an obsession. Okay. But uh I think I think this has been a very entertaining and awesome start to our new podcast. So thanks for uh thanks for sharing your your obsession with us.
SPEAKER_03Uh well you're you're welcome. Um you know maybe uh Next time we talk about something I want to talk about.
SPEAKER_00I'm just gonna dominate it.
SPEAKER_03I'm sorry for being a good conversation.
SPEAKER_00Okay, well that's all the time we have, folks. Thanks for tuning in, and we'll talk more about RJ's perfect job on the next episode.
SPEAKER_01One brother talks, the other jumps in. Half a thaw, and we're off again. Big weird facts. Small town ghosts. I little corners, nobody knows. You bring a question, he brings a burn. We take a left and never return. One more minute, then twelve more turns. That's how it goes when the whole world whirls. Two brothers, two times on dance. Two brothers, two times old. We go away all bro. We find the weird stuff and we let it show. Two brothers, two times old.
SPEAKER_02Two times old.
SPEAKER_01A cursed old statue, a fish on the phone, a guy in a suit with a lawn full of stones. We say, wait, what? He says, Hold up. Now we're three stories deep in a soda cup. He brings a spark, he brings a spin. We chase the thread and fall right in. One small clue turns into a flood. That's the sweet spot, that's the good stuff. Two brothers, two times old. Infinite tangents. Two brothers, two times old. We go away out, bro, we find the weird stuff and we let it go. Two brothers, two times all two times on each two is still side by side, different clocks, same wild ride. If it's strange, we're on the case, two microphone, same base. Two brothers, two times songs. Infinite tangents. Two brothers, two times songs. We go away out, bro, we find the weird stuff and we let it show.
