After last episode's Pokémon deep dive, RJ decided somebody needed to man this podcast up — so naturally we're talking trucks. Specifically, the ranch fleet and the very distinct personality of each one.
It starts with Ranch Force One hitting 203,000 miles and a check engine light coming on at the exact moment RJ was praising it out loud. From there it's the full truck biography: the Suburban's former life as a Celine Dion Uber Black in Colorado (yes, she sat in that seat), the cylinder eight injector that broke in half inside the engine block, and how RJ got so good at pulling the top of the motor off that he eventually did it in 12 minutes flat.
Then there's the Land Rover LR3 — mechanically a tank, electrically a fever dream — which managed to throw 27 fault codes when a single speed sensor wire got severed by a stick. And the glorious Sport 10, a former summer camp runabout with trailer tires, one headlight aimed at the sky, and zero to sixty time that ends in a question mark.
Also: RJ crashing the F-150 into the Suburban while trying to pull it out of being stuck, a dainty attempted intervention, and the Pokedad shirt reveal.
In this episode:
- Ranch Force One, the Celine Dion spec Suburban, and what DNA evidence might be lurking in the back seat
- Cylinder eight, a broken injector, and the Haynes manual's advice to just do it all in reverse
- The LR3's fog light/oil pressure light/FM antenna/rear defroster inter-dependency explained
- 16 different size lug nuts, now down to 15
- The Sport 10: for trailer service only, and proud of it

Cold Open Audio Setup
SPEAKER_04Welcome back, everyone, to another episode of Swing Shift. I'm your host, Rob, along with my co-host RJ. Say hi to the folks.
SPEAKER_03I'd love to, but I'm a little uh perturbed. Uh he didn't say the even you even get the name of the podcast right.
SPEAKER_04Well, I thought it was a little uh it was a bit of a mouthful to say save it for swing shift, so I just said another episode of Swing Shift. Oh no, I was given some direction prior to us recording. Our director's kind of an ass.
SPEAKER_03You know what I you know what I think, and maybe we'll edit this up a little bit too. Um because I think, and I'm not trying to be nitpicky, I'm just trying to be objective about how it sounds. Um you said welcome to episode another episode of the swing show, whatever. Um, I think since the Oh welcome to another swing show. Welcome, yeah, welcome back to the swing show. Something like, yeah, yeah, exactly. I think that flows better if you want to try it. Here, I'll clap for you. Anytime now.
SPEAKER_04Oh, shut up. I already did stuff.
unknownRemember?
SPEAKER_04Well, you know what I picked up on the last episode when I was listening back to it? You were talking about the beats of the telescopes turning and you were snapping. I didn't hear it when we were actually recording.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Well, it's interesting too because um you can very clearly hear me clap too. And yeah. Yeah. Uh I don't know, man. Audio is weird. I'll tell you another thing is that fucking fish tank of yours. Um yeah. So I yeah, don't worry about it because I tell you I can't hear it right now. I I can't hear it um unless it's just dead silence. I but when I first came into the office here, before I had I I didn't have the board like set as the output or whatever for the computer. Right. So it's outputting on the laptop speaker, and man, all you can hear is that fish tank on there.
SPEAKER_04It's like fucking Niagara Falls.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but I can't hear it when it's through the head, the board and the headphones. It's so weird, but that's weird. Yeah, and so that's why I was a couple minutes late because I walked in and I was like, oh god, what's broken in my house? What's dripping?
SPEAKER_04No, I didn't, yeah. It was me, it was me the whole time. That's hilarious.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but uh, alrighty. Um, so alright. Uh 230, 240. Okay, I'll just mark this and you can start when you want to start. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Welcome back, everyone, to another episode of Damn It. Let's do that again. Three, two, one.
Proper Intro And Catch Up
SPEAKER_04Welcome back, everyone, to another swing shift. I'm your host, Rob, and I'm also here with my co-host RJ. Say hi to the folks.
SPEAKER_03Hi to the folks.
SPEAKER_04Hey, folks. So how you been? Oh, pretty good, actually. How about you? Yeah. I've been very good. Very busy. Very busy. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03You're usually really busy. Um, that's I don't know how you do it sometimes, but I'm glad to hear that you're doing that you're very good.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, gotta be, gotta be good. What uh what's new in your neck of the woods?
SPEAKER_03Uh well not a lot. Oh, probably a lot, because I'm I'm always doing like 10 million different things, although nothing ever comes to fruition necessarily.
203,000 Miles And A Check Light
SPEAKER_03Uh I'll tell you like a minor just uh funny thing from I think yesterday, which is um it's just like so me, like how I feel about my life sometimes, is I ran to ran to town to mail some stuff, send some send some packages, get some grocery, get prescription, all that a whole bunch of crap. And I was just I was so I was down, I was down there for like a couple hours. I was killing time between things, waiting for this, waiting for that, and just like kind of cruising around, and I glanced down at my my dash and had just like right as I glanced down, it turned over uh 203,000 miles on my truck, uh Ranch Force one, and uh what a machine that is, right?
SPEAKER_04It is actually pretty impressive.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's a beast, uh, which leads me to my problem. Why my life is terrible. Um, I saw that, I'm like, you, you son of a bitch. I said, look at you. You are what a machine. Then in my head, I'm thinking, this really is awesome. Like how fortunate I've been with this truck, and it's just turned over 203,000 miles. And that mid-century stone like an airplane, you know, boom, boom. And I look down, check engine light literally fucking came on right at that moment. I'm like, oh my god. I can't enjoy anything. Yeah, yeah. So what what what did it end up being? I don't know. I haven't checked it. It was um, you know, I've only had one problem with that truck, which is god like over I think over like two years ago, maybe a little more. Um, when you were here that one time.
SPEAKER_04That was a that was a problem too. Why don't you explain to everybody what was going on with it too? It was misfiring. Okay, and then what it ended up being the problem though, why was it misfiring?
SPEAKER_03Oh god, it's just so stupid. You know, less stupid why more stupid, just the repair. But um no, let me well let me jump back to present for a quick second and say that come on. So it's been no, I will I'll tell that, but like so it's been like two years, more than two years probably since it's had any issue or check engine light or anything, and that's why I was praising it, and then mid-praise check engine light came on. Um, but to answer your question, I don't still love me, Daddy. Yeah, I don't I don't know because I didn't scan it yet. Um, but the more the important thing is it was not a flashing check engine light. So that's good. That's good, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I mean the diagnostician in me is like, okay, so any symptoms?
SPEAKER_03No, yeah. Of course, then I had like another hour, you know, of running around and stuff to do after it came on, and it was some million degrees, and I always worry about in the back of my head there's always something worrying about. Yeah, engines when it's super hot, whatever. But no, it was fine. I was listening for stuff, whatever. In fact, it's I I swear it was running a little bit better after it came on, and I'm like, must be some emissions thing
The Cylinder Eight Misfire Scare
SPEAKER_03that it like it disabled it and it's not working well, and so I don't know. But yeah, that thing that you're talking about a couple years ago, it started misfiring and uh like it's cylinder eight misfire. Cylinder eight. Uh cylinder eight cylinder eight. And uh it was, of course, you know, it the first the first real problem I've had with that truck since I've moved out here. And it happened when I was en route to Houston to pick you up from there for uh eight-cylinder engine is misfiring a one-cylinder. It's not like it wasn't running, but I had stopped halfway to Houston to get gas and start it back up, and it was a you know, like Tel was misfiring the engine, the check engine last flashing, and I'm like, it'll probably make it, but I think probably is not where we want to be right now, and also like it's not good to run an engine with a dead cylinder, right?
SPEAKER_04So no, no, and for context for for the listeners too, like I mean, going to Houston is what two and a half hours from where you live. Yeah, it's uh and yeah. Going back to talking about you going to town, I mean, even that is kind of a a bit of an event in and of itself because you're about 20 to 25 minutes from the closest city to do any shopping, right?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, no, good point. Um, yeah, uh so the Houston thing, you know, at that point I was halfway down there. I was looking at another probably four hours of running it. If I were to continue going to Houston and get you and come back. Um and who knows if it would have made it. And then if it did, we would have had another problem, which is you know, if we need to get parts or whatever. And back then, uh, you know, this was the only highway vehicle that I had. So anyway, yeah, uh yeah. I've got uh I've got a few trucks now, but um, you know, the LR3 getting that about a year ago. That's so I do have two properly proper highway, good vehicles for highway now. But anyway, um yeah, so I like to I sent you a text because you're in the air, and I'm like, call me when you land. And then I turned around and and started headed home. Um then you get in a car and I was pain in the ass for you, but uh whatever. Um got back here and we uh you know, we changed the plugs, did some stuff, I don't know, a couple things, and put it all back together and it was that was great. No misfire. Took it to town, blah-da, da-da-da. And uh then we went somewhere the next day and it was doing it again. And so long story short
Injector Failure And The Hard Fix
SPEAKER_03on this thing is it had a bad injector on the cylinder eight and the and it was kind of intermittent, although it took about three weeks for me to get it resolved, which for my situation back uh back then especially was terrifying, very stressful. Um, the smiling means of transportation, like Rob said, I'm not close to things, I don't have close neighbors, whatever. So uh and over those core those three weeks, you know, I had I had to drive sometimes, and so it became it went from intermittent to very not intermittent all the time. Yeah, and so it's kind of a pain in the butt to change the injectors on these engines. Um, it's a Chevy 5.3 phenomenal engine. I love it, by the way. It's a one of the best-made powertrains, yeah. So smooth, it's got you know power for days, whatever. Um, but it's a pain in the butt because the injector is um it it's attached to the fuel rail. So if you're taking out one injector, you're taking out all four on one side, and cylinder eight is all the way on the back of the passenger side. It's the most difficult to get to by far. Yep. Um, and knucklebuster. It really is, yeah. Yeah, but what really freaking sucked though is once I'd gone through everything else, blah, blah, blah, and decided it was the injector, um, pulled, you know, took it all apart again. And when I popped that fuel rail off, uh the top half of the fuel injector came out with it. Oh shit. I don't remember that part. That was terrible. Um and the injectors are just they're just kind of pressed, they're not bolt bolted or anything to the engine. They're bolted to the fuel rail, and then they're just kind of press fit in, and they got little O-rings and stuff. Um, so there was about like three-quarters of an inch left of this thing down on the top of the cylinder that you can't see because it's so far back there, there's no clearance. And I was just I think I cried for a little bit, man enough to have for a minute.
SPEAKER_02So I'm like, this is bad.
SPEAKER_03This is potentially catastrophic. Um just in terms of you know, worst case scenario, I'd have to get towed or whatever. So I eventually, I don't know. I think it took me about two days of often on fucking with it and wrenches and weird things and angles and stuff, and I just eventually got it out, and I was like, oh, thank God. Um and then you cried some more. I did, yes, I did, I'm sure. And uh, you know, from there it was just like the Haynes manual says installation is reverse of removal.
SPEAKER_04So just do all the same steps, but uh from bottom to top.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Well, I'd gotten at this point really good at taking like pretty much the whole top of the engine off. Like, yeah. I literally I think the last time I took it all off, which there's a number of things you have to take off, including the intake manifold. Like the first time I did was probably like two and a half hours. The last time I did it was 12 minutes. So you better believe that once I had that injector out and I looked it over real good, make sure nothing appeared like had broken off inside, and just took a look at the cylinders. Okay, everything looks clean, fine. I it was back together in 15 minutes and running.
SPEAKER_04So that goes out to anybody that uh that's listening that maybe work for an F1 or NASCAR company race team. Um he's got pit crew potential.
SPEAKER_03Part of my trick is uh every time I work on my truck, um, the number of parts that come off of it is always just a little bit more than the parts that go back on. Like, where did that screw come from? Oh well. There's that, yeah, that and like um, you know, like trim covers and oh yeah, this, that, and the other. I mean, because there's a whole I think there's a whole cover that goes over the intake manifold. Yeah, that's in the whatever. Um I have a lot of parts of my truck in the barn.
SPEAKER_04You know, one of the things I didn't think about until just you saying that is you're always bragging about the fuel economy. Well, you've dropped the weight by like probably 20% since you moved out there. I'm telling you, it's a performance mod.
SPEAKER_03Um starting with you know a third of the rear bumper, um deciding it didn't want to be it didn't want to be a bumper no more.
SPEAKER_04Um it's starting to look more like a rat rod, not really a performance mod.
SPEAKER_03I'll tell you what.
The Suburban’s Celine Dion Past
SPEAKER_03Uh aesthetically, it's you know, it's a far cry from its Celine Dion days.
SPEAKER_02Let's just put it that way.
SPEAKER_03Oh, you gotta you gotta fill everybody in on that part too. Yeah, uh yeah. This this poor truck. Uh and again, it's a beast, it's a machine, apart from that one issue, which happened that you know had 180 or whatever, a thousand miles on it, so I guess can't complain of an injector go out. Um and inside, I mean, it's um it's the top end spec, just beautiful truck. Never looks beautiful on the outside because it's just I mean, it's always you can't keep it clean on here, it's always dirty. Uh it's been sitting, it's been sun-baked at the ranch for several years in the paints, you know, whatever. But uh in its former life, it was uh an Uber Black in Colorado, and um it conveyed one Celine Dion on only one occasion, I will say. Yes, but she sat in that vehicle. Let's put it this way. If she went missing like like Nancy Guthrie and it came down to it and they were doing DNA swabs in my truck, well, I I'd be in deep shit.
SPEAKER_04Be a a little bit of Celine Dion and a lot of dog vomit. Right.
SPEAKER_03And dog piss. Um, although that only happened once, but it was an enormous amount. And if you ever want to know uh how how big of a job is it to remove the entire interior of the vehicle short of the front seats? Uh a lot. It's horrible. Um, so don't don't let yeah. So pick when you pick your dogs up from that all day vet thing, you know, to get a spay or whatever, you drop them off at seven, you pick them up at four. Do the do the smart thing. Take them out to Tingle before you get on the road for half an hour.
SPEAKER_04Potty break would be helpful. Well, yeah, okay. So back to talking it.
SPEAKER_03No, no, no.
SPEAKER_04Oh man.
SPEAKER_03No, yeah. Okay, keep going. Yeah, Seling Dion, I'm a huge fan, which uh uh it's surprising in some regards. I'm not like a huge fan of her music per se. Although I will say it's objectively fantastic. She's amazing. Um, just a huge fan of her, like her character, and you know, she had that stiff man syndrome and overgone, whatever. But yeah, point being, so back to the truck. Uh it is the Celine Dion spec. So I mean, and I never sat out, I never sought out to get like the fully loaded version of a suburban. It's just that's how the that's how it shook out. Because I bought it at the toward the very beginning of the pandemic, right before or as vehicle prices were going up, up, you know, about to go up like crazy. So I just got what I could get, and it's you know, the top specs, so it's a leather, it's got like 18 screens in it, all this crap. Well, Celine Dion needs her, she needs her second row or third row screen, depending on. Um, but yeah, it's so in that regard it's really cool. So I mean, it's so it's full-blown truck, four-wheel drive, very capable out here, but at the same time, it's uh it's a pretty nice ride going on
Features That Work And Don’t
SPEAKER_03the highway.
SPEAKER_04You know what makes it really cool is if all those features that you listed off actually worked.
SPEAKER_03Um a lot of them do. Well, the ones that I listed off work. Um I will say there are a lot of collision avoidance? I didn't I didn't list that.
SPEAKER_04I know. I'm just asking, does collision avoidance work?
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_03But I mean, got the radio to work after it stopped. It didn't it never stopped working, it just sort of took on a its own personality. It really did really, really inconvenient. Um and uh yeah, well, I was gonna say, you know, collision avoidance uh the system that tells me that the collision avoidance system doesn't work works, so that's something. Okay, that's good.
SPEAKER_04I mean, uh positive through a negative. I mean, I guess another piece of it too is that majority of the collision avoidance uh hardware is sitting in the barn, so that's probably part of the problem. Oh percentage of it. I mean, not the majority. Percentage. Well, what if I told you that one percent of something would make the rest of the 99% work or not work?
SPEAKER_03I would say that uh that's usually not true, but um in the context of one of these systems, I understand it is true because you told me that. Um I'm like, I don't understand. It's like it's just a third of a bumper, yeah. Maybe three. But yeah, it is one of those things, it's all or nothing. Um because because you know it's got the radar cruise control, it's got uh all that stuff that goes along with it. That's fantastic. That would be really cool if it worked, but um it doesn't. And uh, oh, it has a heads-up display, which I don't even know that that that year had them. They offered them all.
SPEAKER_04Did you know that? Yeah, you told me, I mean, every time you pick me up, you're like, hey, do you know this thing has a heads-up display? Whatever.
SPEAKER_03Um I only discovered it accidentally because I was doing diagnostics on it, and I hook, you know, I hook up one of those uh thing uh computers to the OBD2 where you can do actuation tests. Um I just like said actuate everything on the instrument cluster. I'm like, oh my god, heads up display. I didn't know. Um never actually seen the heads-up display though. I've seen it on during a test. Okay, hey, yeah, I mean that's cool. You know, there's a I'm not saying that this is a special Celine Dion spec vehicle. I will say though, there are a couple apart from those things. So just assume it's fully loaded, because I mean it's got every option you can get on LTZ suburban, whatever. There's a couple other things that I think even surprised you. Like it's got a tow rating that's about a thousand pounds higher than the highest tow rating I can find on book for that year, Suburban. Um, and then the other thing, which you may just be wrong about this, it has a 30-gallon fuel tank. And you actually told me you said that would have to be like a special sack or whatever, because it just they don't come with that. They don't, yeah. So I don't know. Um that maybe Miss Dolnsat there. I think 30 gallon tank. I think so. I think so.
SPEAKER_04That was actually a really good impression. That's I'm kind of impressed. Thank you.
SPEAKER_03Thank you.
SPEAKER_04Um well uh so so I guess the point I was kind of driving at is you've you've taken off the top end of the motor. You've completely well almost completely disassembled the entire interior. Uh well um yeah, and including a good portion of the dash and your efforts of repairing the radio.
When Recovery Turns Into A Crash
SPEAKER_04That's true. But in addition to that, um you've also exposed a lot of the rear end through various collisions and mishaps. So you really do know this truck inside and out. Wait a minute, collisions?
SPEAKER_03Oh, never mind. I don't want to talk about that. Um I don't know what you're talking about, but you're talking about when I crashed my truck into my other truck, right? When I was trying to get my truck unstuck. Which is the greatest video to date that I've ever seen. I'll make you, I was gonna say I'll never see the light of day, but I'll make you a deal. You helped me out with getting this uh this mama mike wedding video where they do the Macarino. So I can publish that uh, you know. Remember that from Set and Center? Uh yeah, you help me out on that, and I will we can put we can put the video out of uh I don't know if I screamed, but if I didn't, I it's probably just because there was no audio. I don't know.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I think there was some some gasping involved, not necessarily screaming, but it was more the visual of you realizing what was happening and your your attempt, your feeble attempt at trying to avoid that from happening. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03It was uh I'm gonna give myself a little little more credit than that and say I I fully understood what was happening. And I didn't try right like and I didn't try. You know, I clearly didn't try to do that. But you could see hence the feeble part. Well, I think the feebleness came in where I was like, oh you can see me like, oh, I should do this. No, I can't like reach uh no. But let me paint a picture for people though, like so uh F F1, yeah, F150, 2009 F150. I got as a package deal, um pretty good price. Came with a free Sport 10. That's pretty badass. But uh S10 for the layman per for the layman. Well, I've heard of those. Uh Sport 10. Um anyway, it was a ranch truck. Uh like I got it for really cheap. And it had it had some it had some engine price, I can't remember. Oh the phasers. It had something with that, I think it was a 4.6 Triton V8. Uh no, it was 5.4. It was a 5.4. Um had something that you know, it was like a couple things I didn't it. It wasn't the highway vehicle, so it was it became a ranch truck, and man, we got a lot of use out of it. Um and uh it got stuck a lot.
SPEAKER_04It well, it was two-wheel drive with shitty tires. All right, it's one, it's really one-wheel drive, let's be honest.
SPEAKER_03Uh yeah, well, yeah. Uh it's no-wheel drive anymore, but uh yeah. Uh so yeah, it got stuck quite a bit. Um, because it had really bad, just really bad summer road tires, and it was two-wheel drive, which is just it's no, it's no blade. I'm out here. And so one particular thing, I it was stuck kind of uh kind of down near the ponds.
The Rolling F150 And Aftermath
SPEAKER_03So like from the house here at the ranch, it slopes down about 300 feet, gentle slope, down to the ponds. So it's kind of stuck on that slope, and um, I had attempted to pull it out with the ranch with Ranch Force One, my truck, front ways going uphill, and it didn't work. Um, and part of it was because it got, you know, got stuck, and so the back end, the rear end, the diff, and everything were, you know, in uh the ground, right? Yep. And uh so I thought, well, you decided to let gravity help I'll pull it out from behind. And I'm not a complete moron because I understand how gravity works, and yeah, I know that there's uh so I know A, I need to, you know, not B in its path, but then there's also B in this case, which is there's a bond behind it. Uh now and these are all contingency things, of course, because I was like, I'm gonna I'm gonna put a strap on it, I'm gonna get to suburban behind it, and I'm gonna just pull, give it some gentle pulls and tell it just just to break it loose, and then I'll go jump in and whatever. Well, there's no difference between stuck and rolling. Like it when it broke loose, it just started rolling. And uh I had the I had the the foresight to put a little GoPro on just on a magnet mount on the side of it, which was fortuitous because it was pointed back and you see the suburban and then tug, and then all of a sudden, oh shit.
SPEAKER_04All of a sudden, moving and the suburban is not. The suburban is not, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And the thing is well, this was a stupid thing to do, I guess, but then at the same time, like the reason why it hit this it hit the suburban and took out some of the taillight is the same reason why I'm kind of smart, because like in that video, you'll very clearly see a suburban was not straight line behind the truck, the F150. No, no, offset. I knew it was gonna happen. Well, I knew what could happen, and it was offset. Just about two degrees, not enough, as it turns out. And uh and I had done it in such a way that if you know it happened to break loose and start rolling, which of course I figured it wasn't going to, parentheses it did, that there were there were trees, so like right to the side of the F-150 or the suburban, or there were big pines that you know would stop it, and probably in calamitous fashion, but would stop it. And so, yes, it ended up breaking loose, and then you see brake brake lights on the suburban, it stops F-150's rolling. You see the reverse lights flash as I'm putting it in park, door opens, I come out hands in the air, probably. It's not rolling fast, you know, but it's 6,000 pounds, so you're not gonna get in front of it. It's just kind of careening down. And then oh yeah, the sound was on because I remember the ghastly sound of when it sideswiped the back corner of the suburban. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04You just hear, oh shit, yeah. I think my the best part about that whole video though, is just watching watching you react to this whole thing taking place because you know you park it, there's a bit of a delay you getting out of the suburban. The door pops open, you careen around, you you just like instantly turn around to check on it, and then you kind of hesitate, like is that it it's still coming. And then it was this like hesitative, like kind of like half-attempted run that was very dainty as well. Uh dainty. Your hand, I could see your palms as you were as you were chugging your hands. If I hear that in your mind's eye, uh huh.
SPEAKER_02Like, oh, uh oh, uh oh.
SPEAKER_04And then uh and then all of a sudden the thing just yeah, goes right into the corner of the suburban, and it's just oh shit. Yeah. Oh my god. And then whack, right into a tree. It was fantastic.
SPEAKER_03You know, I don't think it actually did hit a tree.
SPEAKER_04Um, that was the other one.
SPEAKER_03That was that was the time. That was the front of the F150, and that was a different thing. And let's finish this story. Uh yeah, it uh it actually ended up working. I got kind of lucky in a sense because um, I think what had happened is the uh well basically like it didn't it didn't end up hitting a tree because I think oh yeah, here's what happened. So as it was rolling toward the suburban, it uh and this is only probably like you know, 50 feet, you know, tops, probably more like 30 or 40 feet, because I was using a big strap. As it was rolling, what happened is uh I think the last little bit, it started to it started spinning the strap around its own tire. And so it sides which yeah, so it side swipe is suburban, but like basically, you know, after it did that, it ran out of slack and it was still attached to suburban. So that's crazy. The suburban stopped it and whatever. And somehow the suburban still gets credit for for saving the day. It does, it did. Um and it yes, the the tail light assembly, it didn't break it. What it did is it like just like it sheared like the side of it, and not even the thing, just like the glass, like the plastic cover of one side, not even uh but you know, and the weirdest and the taillight works fine, everything worked fine after that, whatever. But ever since then, for some reason it's got you know what ended up happening is the right indicator on the mirror, not the taillight, but the mirror stopped working after that, and now I get a rapid flash every time you use indicators.
SPEAKER_04So basically the suburban's trying to act like the LR3.
The LR3’s Electrical Soap Opera
SPEAKER_04Um no, I got into a rear I got into a rear collision. Um the horn doesn't work.
SPEAKER_03I was gonna say the difference is that uh with the suburban, um the the mode of failure here is at least conceivably consistent with what happened. You crash on the same side, you crash the truck into a turn signal thing. Yes, there's that. And then the other thing is it's consistent. Okay, yeah. Like the LR3, it's just like oh my god, it's so funny that damn thing. Like one of the so uh it alternates between either the oil pressure light is on or the brakes don't work light is on. But both of those things are fine, and neither one is on at the same time. And when the oil pressure light is on, then if you have the fog lights on, the fog light indicator light will work. However, when the oil pressure light is not on, and you have the fog lights on. No fog lights. No fog lights work fine. The fog light indicator light doesn't work.
SPEAKER_04It would have been hilarious if you said the wipers don't work or something like that.
SPEAKER_03It's uh well, there's something with the back windows where a certain combination of the order in which you open the door, put the key in, turn the key, move the uh shift. I swear to god, then the then the rear windows won't work for that particular session. Oh my god, that thing is so hilariously finicky. It's it's awesome. Yeah, amazing. Well, and the I think one I discovered after you left, um uh the FM radio antenna is great, it's actually much better than the one in my Sbourbin. Um, unless you're using the rear window defroster and the LR, in which case it doesn't work at all. Just static. I'm like, this is so fun.
SPEAKER_04Oh, oh man. Yeah, it's a great. I mean, I think the thing that I love most about it is that it'll tell you every fucking thing that's wrong with it, too. It's like, hey, we lost FM signal. Like, I don't need a warning for that. I mean, everything, everything that goes wrong with it's like the the moonroof is inactive right now.
SPEAKER_03Yes, yeah, it I know. Um, and it's uh another thing, the thing I love about it is mechanically it's fucking tank. I mean Yeah, it's it's a great truck. It's got uh it's got a 4.4 liter V8. It's got uh like the fucking subframe on this thing. It's unbelievable, but and it weighs, it weighs like 500 pounds more than a suburb.
Lug Nuts And Suspension Secrets
SPEAKER_04Oh my gosh. Yeah, and it's not well don't forget the the best feature of that truck too, which is it has 16 different size lug nuts. 16.
SPEAKER_03Uh not anymore.
SPEAKER_04Oh, you fixed that. Oh yeah, that's right.
SPEAKER_03Now we're down to 15. Yeah. Oh my god, that was that was unbelievable. I there was a there was a point, there was a stretch of time where I uh literally I was keeping five um different size sockets in the vehicle because I basically after you rotated the tires when we learned all this, I did the math and kind of went through afterwards and figured out that yeah, I'm gonna need like at least I'm gonna need these five sizes to be able to get off any one of the tires. Oh god. But yeah, I put new ones on there. Um good, yeah. And I thought you were gonna say it had 16 different off or suspension height settings. That too. Which is a very work. Well, no, they all work. It's just I was gonna say it's a very again British thing because it has three, there's a switch, it's got three settings. You got low, regular, and high, basically. Let's call them that. However, when you start reading the manual, there's another thing we discovered when we were working on it that day. Reading the manual, and it's got like 10. Yeah. There's like certain scenarios in which, you know, given this thing and this other thing, it'll go into sub-low height. Or if you're using off-road height and it detects a certain thing or a rock, it'll go on to off-road plus, but then off-road plus extra, you know, just it's it's like you want, yeah. It's not hard to figure out why it's got a lot of potential for electrical bucks because just so much crap in there.
SPEAKER_04I think I think my favorite part about it too is the fact that it unleashes somehow more power if you set the suspension at its lowest setting. Only at that time, though.
SPEAKER_03Less drag.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, less drag. Less well, and and frankly, that was a brilliant design on on their part because that thing is a little fucking scary at highway speeds.
SPEAKER_03Not not anymore. Yeah, well, yeah, and actually, um the tire rotation that you did, you know, the half the one that took half a day. Uh yeah, it it really uh it really solves almost all those problems. So it's pretty solid now on the highway, uh, which reminds me I do need to at some point just get the tires in to have them all rotated. But yeah, I think the tires that were on not rotated, I'm sorry. Balanced. Replaced? No, balanced. Oh, balanced, balanced, yeah. Yeah. Um, because yeah, the tires that were on the front were causing a little bit of squirreliness in the front end, um, a little shakiness. But uh little wandering. Well, wander it was wandery. Yeah, it was really wandery. And that was not that was what was kind of weird to me, like it because it didn't feel like tire issue, because it was just a little like yeah, wandering inconsistent.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, like maybe you had a bad bushing on your suspension, or maybe something was a little loose on the steering, you know. But yeah, everything checked out, it was solid. Like, okay, this is weird. So it's like, all right, we'll just rotate the tires, and she's fine. Yeah, works great.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, pretty much. Um, and uh he said it's got more pickup, but it went in low. So there's a there's a just reminding me, there's a uh another hidden suspension height mode, which I don't know what's called, but it's like called high speed cruise or something. I don't know. But like the because the lowest mode that you can switch it to is called, I think, um, entry. Basically, it's to be used, um, you know, very low speeds, uh, and to get in and out, that kind of stuff. But it's got this thing and it's in the mouth to find it, but I'm pretty sure it's a like 105 that it says above uh at speeds of 105 miles per hour and higher, the vehicle will lower an additional 13 millimeters. I swear to God. Like Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's a great track. I love that track.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's a it's a hell of a lot of fun. Um and uh and you know, a lifesaver, which is what it was meant to be. Um, kind of going yeah full full circle on the suburban thing. Um, is I needed a uh reliable, capable, you know, four by four or whatever, blah blah blah. And so maybe me, I thought reliable? How about how about a Land Rover? Oh boy. Oh, but another boy did you get a good deal? Yeah, I did. Um another thing, because you said it tells you everything's wrong with it. I
One Cut Wire And 27 Faults
SPEAKER_03was out on the outside acreage one night, I think trying to pull the exped out. God, I get shit stuck a lot though. But anyway, exped was stuck out there and I was pulling it out. That was a pretty thick bramble I was driving through, and uh and ended up when I was driving back out, uh, ended up catching something, I don't know, I think a stick I caught in there and it severed the the speed sensor wire on one wheel. Um now I didn't know what was wrong at the time. What I do know is as I was driving back, ding, ding, ding, ding, like 17 lights on the dash came up, you know, including the check engine light. Okay. And it's like, you know, some some warning message like system malfunction on the dash. I'm like, fuck, okay. Like I'll just drive it back to the back to the house. I'm still on this dirt road coming out. Suspension lowering. I'm like, why? What does that have to do with this engine fault or whatever's going on? And it's just like traction control off long, and just like you wanted a time. And I'm like, oh god, I said I really and this was at night, so I didn't know what, you know, I'm like, God, I must have fucked this thing up. And so I just I I just got it, not back at the house, I just got it off the off the acreage, just onto the dirt road, and I just left it there overnight. I'm like, I'll pull it back tomorrow. And so I did, I towed it, uh, flat towed it back, and uh I did the coat, like put the computer on it and shit. So for this speed sensor wire, which um pretty sure it probably has four. I mean, it has to have four for one of them to have the wire severed. There were 27 faults, one of which was the passenger lower blower motor uh vent door malfunction. And I'm like, oh god, I love you so much, LR3.
SPEAKER_04Please tell me that you replaced this the the speeds wheel speed sensor, and then that code also went away for the blower motor.
SPEAKER_03I did. No, well, I did not replace the sensor, I just spliced the wire ball together. Spliced the wire ball together. Nice. And yes, the code for the vent door went away. That that's what makes that truck so fucking awesome.
SPEAKER_02I know.
SPEAKER_04Oh my gosh. Okay, so we've covered we've covered the burb, we've covered the LR3. You touched on this one, but I something tells me like your heart really is with this last one, which is the Sport 10.
The Free 1996 S10 Legend
SPEAKER_03Um, I have a I you know, I I have a lot of heart for all my vehicles. Um because we've been through some stuff. But uh man, the sport 10. What a machine. Uh machine it is 1996 Chevrolet S10. It's got like, I don't know, 160,000. Not a whole lot of miles on it, but it was a uh so I got it like probably two years ago, maybe something that's 96. Yeah, so probably spent like what 28 years. It was uh it was a a runaround, just a runaround rig at a like a summer camp. Summer camp. Yes, yeah, summer camp, for like almost 30 years. And oh my god. Wow. Uh it'd probably be shorter. You want to talk about opulence. Uh yeah, opulence, yeah. I was gonna say it'd probably be a shorter list if you like just talked about the things it still has. Um yeah, because for example, door panels on the inside, no, uh seat. Don't need them. Kinda. Um it's gone, radio's gone, vent. It still has the vent holes where the vents would be. Um but no uh no no vent vent grills. No, no grills, as far as I can see, no fan or anything. Um it's it does have two. Well, it had two functioning headlights, one of which is uh uh and it's more of an up light. Um sort of points at the sky more so than ahead.
SPEAKER_04Spotlight. Yeah. You roll it out anytime there's a big event just to you know show everybody, hey, this is where the event's taking place. Yeah. Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_03Um literally, if like if you just had like if you if you got what like a used car inspection, you know, sheet or whatever, like just a generic one, whatever. Every item on there, you could you could check it's defective on this thing. Um however, it runs like a fucking champ. Every time you start what and it sounds like that. I don't know why it sounds like uh fucking vacuum on steroids, but it does. Um fucking and it just goes and goes and goes, and it's gutless as all fuck. I mean it's yeah, I was gonna say zero to sixty, never. Yes, yeah, zero to sixty. That's just ends in a question mark. Um yeah, yeah, yeah. It doesn't it's pretty gutless, but man, like it it's you know, so small. These compact trucks from back then. Oh my god, the difference between like you know, if they have S10s now, you know, probably or a Tacoma's a good example. Jesus Christ. The a ninety six S ten is closer in dimensions to my side by side than it would be to a modern compact pickup. It's like a Ford it's like a Honda Accord with a bed, basically. Yeah, pretty much. Um which makes it really useful out here because it can get in and out and up and down all the trails and stuff. Um and uh especially on its 14 ply trailer tires. Yeah, I was gonna say it's got uh uh four tires on it. Uh they're very old. I think old enough not to have date stamps, but the stamp they do have is the stamp that says for trailer service only.
SPEAKER_04I mean, in its defense, it wouldn't ever be able to obtain it hit highway speeds anyway where that would matter. So it's perfect. It's perfect.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. You know what I figured out. No, never mind. I got something else. Um but I was gonna say, like, it's uh it it's it's one of those and I got it for free. That's another thing. I'll tell that whole story someday, but like I when I bought the F-150, um I got a talk the guy down to a really good deal on the F-150 and got him to throw in the Sport 10 and deliver them both for free. And so it was fantastic.
SPEAKER_04Fantastic yeah, it's amazing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and you found uh a pr a pretty interesting utilization of the Sport 10 uh one time on the other.
SPEAKER_04I was gonna I was I was gonna jump into that. I mean, so yes, it is a very it is a very uh run hard and hung up wet kind of truck, right? This thing is beat to shit, but it runs like a top, it always starts. Um and as fun as it can be to drive. For whatever reason, it is just so fun. It makes you feel like you're a kid driving your dad's truck off-road.
SPEAKER_03I'll tell you one reason that's fun to drive is suspension. It's only just sort of a concept. Because bouncy.
SPEAKER_04The yeah, the the uh shocks are made out of pillows. So yeah, it's very it's very boggy and bouncy. But um, yeah, so it's very awesome for you using it's like we found for uh hauling firewood. So um that's a great use, but our favorite use of that sport tin is when we're
Crushing Limbs With The S10
SPEAKER_04falling trees, you have when you cut down the log down, or okay, you cut off all the shrubbery and and uh limbs from the main the main uh log of the tree. The the what what what am I trying to think of? Trunk, thank you. The trunk of the tree, um, so that way you can start making cutting logs. We found that it was gonna be very time consuming to try to break down all the small branches and offshoots from all the limbs, and uh came up with a really the brilliant idea of just using the Sport 10 to just run them over and mash them into oblivion to where it was a more manageable pile. And it worked great. Yeah, and it was awesome. That was the most fun I've ever had, like breaking down trees and and limbs. Yeah, awesome.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Uh I remember the smile on your face after you did that first run. It's like this is like the kind of thing that you know you want to do, like a kid in you wants to do, but like you never have the chance to just take a you know, a full vehicle. Just like do something like that. It's just fun, but it really is. I think the first run you made though, like, or maybe the second one, I don't know, but like you made another run, and you're like, oh one of the branches came through the floorboard.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that that it is a fun truck. It is super cool, but you know, it it is a turd. It's a it's a major turd, but it's a it's our turd.
SPEAKER_03That's right.
SPEAKER_04That's awesome. Um well I think that just about takes us to our time limit here. Yeah, definitely. But um hey man, it was awesome being able to talk about all the uh the the trucks and their different personalities on the ranch. And uh we didn't get to all of them yet.
SPEAKER_03Um which is one fun thing.
Trucks Talk Ends With Pokemon
SPEAKER_03But then I also I just I I just want to say that like Go ahead. I feel like I feel like somebody needed to man this podcast up a little bit after the Pokemon thing.
SPEAKER_04Um, you know, dude, like a lot of people a lot of real men's men uh collect Pokemon. So it takes a real man to collect Pokemon. How about that? I'm really secure in my masculinity. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03I like that. I'm should you get that on a shirt?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03Look. Look, it takes a real man.
SPEAKER_04Hear me out. Hear me out. I you know what's actually hilarious though, is I'm wearing a shirt right now that says Pokydad. So Oh my god. So manly.
SPEAKER_03I hope it has a picture of like the Pokemon stuff on it.
SPEAKER_04It does. It's so on the it's it was a Father's Day gift, and on the back it says best dad ever, or something like that, and it's um the main the main Pokemon supporter or trainer, and it's on one side is Pikachu and the other is Mewtwo, and under the under them she had it uh Kai and Robbie's names put. It's actually pretty cute.
SPEAKER_03That sounds really cute. Um kind of lost me at Poopadoo and Chikachu or whatever. Like you you know what Pikachu is. Don't even try. No, I don't.
SPEAKER_04Is that another Pokemon? Pikachu is like the the Mickey Mouse of Disney, okay? So Okay.
SPEAKER_03I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_04I thought Pikachu was a different video game. I didn't the yellow like cat rat looking thing.
SPEAKER_03All the Pokemons? No, that's Pikachu. I thought that's what a Pokemon was. Like that's a Pokemon species of the case. Pikachu is a Pokemon. Yeah, and they're all those little yellow things, right?
SPEAKER_04No, no, no. Dude, like Mewtwo's a Pokemon. The little the the purple cat looking thing. That's God's show. You know what, dude? You're not you're not helping me, you're not helping me look any better right now by making me explain this.
SPEAKER_03I'm just you can picture the little fishing reel. That's what I'm doing right now. I know, I'm just kidding, every fucking time.
Sign Off And Theme Song
SPEAKER_04You're a dick. Anyway, that's uh that's another great episode of uh well, that's another great swing shift. How about that? Um, and we'll catch y'all on the next one.
SPEAKER_00One brother talks, the other jumps in. Half a thaw, and we're off again. Big weird facts. Small town goes, I live corner, nobody knows.
SPEAKER_01You bring the question, you bring the burn, we take a left and never return. One more minute and twelve more turns. That's how it goes when the whole world world. It's funny, stand down to two, brothers to do. Time to talk about it. Two brothers, two times all the time. Wait, what? It says hold up. Now with three storage deep in a stole the cup, it brings a box, it brings a spin, which is the fastest RIDM. One small food turns into a flood. That's the three. That's the good stuff. Time starting to do it.
