Remember the friend Rob cut off over a Pokémon card? He showed up. Not a text — a knock on the front door at 10am on a Saturday, having tracked down the address from a months-old screenshot.
What follows is a genuinely surprising redemption, and Rob has to admit maybe RJ was right about giving people the benefit of the doubt. (Rob, for the record, pre-blocked the guy on ChatGPT. RJ blocked him on MySpace just in case.)
From there it's a full sci-fi summit. Robbie's building a digital pizza empire on Roblox — pizza street, virtual trade school, possible digital unemployment. Then the main event: RJ makes his case for Stargate SG-1 (the ancients, the gate network, the Asgard, world-building with more layers than an onion), Rob makes his case for Interstellar, so they make a deal. RJ watches Interstellar again with fresh eyes; Rob watches two episodes of Stargate SG-1, curated by RJ. They'll reconnoiter at a later shift.
Also: John Cena interrogating Tweety Bird, Project Hail Mary, and why RJ has to narrate his own thought process just to understand his own sentences.
In this episode:
- The Pokémon reconciliation nobody saw coming — including the light stalking
- Robbie's Roblox pizza economy and the specter of digital unemployment
- Coyote vs. Acme: John Cena and Looney Tunes
- The Stargate SG-1 pitch: the ancients, the Asgard, and why Earth doesn't just steal alien tech
- Interstellar vs. Stargate SG-1 — the deal, the terms, and the rematch to come

Clocking In And Setting The Stage
SPEAKER_00Welcome everyone. It's time to clock in for another swing shift. I'm your host, Rob, alongside my brother and co-host RJ. What's going on, man? Whoopah. I just punched in. Not a whole lot.
SPEAKER_03How are you doing, buddy?
SPEAKER_00Good, man. I've had a uh quite the week. Um, that's interesting. Um we can talk about me, though. Just kidding.
unknownWhat's up?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we did that on the last episode, so you can you can sit back. Okay, pal. I've actually got some interesting stories and even a more interesting update for you.
SPEAKER_01Okay, great.
The Pokemon Friend Shows Up
SPEAKER_00All right. So if you recall back a couple episodes, we had a discussion about my issue with a friend that I made through Pokemon where I felt like uh I might may have been taken advantage of and decided to cut him off, right? So Saturday, this last Saturday, um, I got a random knock at my front door at like 10 o'clock in the morning. And it was that dude. Whoa.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00That's fucking weird. Like, what the Yeah. I was like, what the fuck? He's never been to my house.
SPEAKER_03Oh.
SPEAKER_00Um, he knew about where I live, but not like exactly. And I opened the door, I'm like, how the fuck do you know where I live? He's like, Oh, you'd sent a screenshot a while ago and it had your address on it. I'm like, that's fucking creepy, dude. Yeah. He's like, Well, are you okay? Like, what's going on? I'm like, why don't you take a seat? Let's let's let's have a chat.
SPEAKER_01So she'd take a seat like a like a dad. Here, kiddo. Here's a lifesaver.
SPEAKER_00Pull up a chair and shut the fuck up. So um, I laid it out for him, you know, just kind of like exactly how I laid it out for you. And he was like, dude, he's like, oh my god. He's like, I feel so awful. He's like, this is what happened. And he's like, so we got the cards from you, and then it motivated us to want to try to complete our master set, and we they had like four cards left to get after I gave them what I gave them. And so I guess he had a bunch of sealed product that they opened up, and it was like like an excess of like 50 packs the very next day, and they opened them all and they pulled the same card again. And I was like, that's really fucking coincidental that that happened. I'm like, what's more coincidental is the fact that you didn't bother to tell me. He's like, Well, we because they they post their their stuff online, so they'll record themselves opening the packs and they post it up online. And he's like, Well, I was hoping that you would see the video and be like, Oh my god, I can't believe that happened. And you're like, Well, I'm not a stalker like you. So yeah. I was like, Well, I kind of fucking unfollowed you and blocked you on almost every platform I could think of, and you still came knocking on my door. So anyway, you're like, I went back and blocked you on MySpace just in case you have that. I pre-blocked you on Chat GPT. So I uh we we hashed it out. I got my I just the the feeling I got from the guy was like he genuinely like was not trying to screw me over and stuff. I was like, you know, you probably could have communicated a little bit better, but I think probably the same, not probably, definitely the same could be said of me too. Like I I should have reached out and been like, hey dude, like what's going on? This kind of kind of bullshit, but instead I just kinda ghosted him.
Apologies, Ghosting, And New Boundaries
SPEAKER_00And uh, so we talked it out, we made amends, and uh everything's good.
SPEAKER_01That's wild, like totally unexpected.
SPEAKER_00I know. I was like, Ryan's never gonna freaking believe this crap. This is wild.
SPEAKER_01So um I have to say it's that's really it's really cool. Um the the I'm gonna I'm gonna call it light stalkering. The light stalking aside. Um, I mean like there's two ways to look at that. One is like that's a little creepy, the other is like he cared, you know, enough. Genuinely cares, yeah. Um but no, that's really that's really cool. And also, let me just check my notes here. Yeah, uh, so are we saying I was right? Um, you don't know what have people have going on in their lives, and maybe, maybe yeah, lesson learned, lesson learned.
SPEAKER_00It's you know, I need to be more uh more communicative and and more curious, I guess is the way to put it. Just like, hey, um what's going on here, you know? As opposed to just jumping straight to conclusions.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, maybe. I think like we we we got pretty deep into this on that other episode, so we don't need to rehash it. But like uh yeah, I mean it's always it's it's always complicated. This is one this is a genuinely surprising result. Like uh that just doesn't happen that much. Um I do have No it doesn't. Yeah, I have a question though about because your uh your thing your thing with them was kind of twofold. One like well that card, that one card thing was kind of the the straw that broke the camel.
SPEAKER_00But there was like also a pattern to address as well. Yeah. Um a little bit. Yeah, I did. I did address that, but I also like I think I think I found like a good balance with how I handle things with him going forward, which is basically just kind of keep things even keel, you know, keep things at a a relative distance and not um not overextend myself with generosity, like just try to keep things as yeah, on an even playing field.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. So um okay. I was well, I was gonna ask if uh you felt like he was genuine, but it's kind of not even a question because he really didn't have I mean any yeah, if if if his if his motives were to to really try to screw me over or you know, whatever, he wouldn't have ever shown up at our door.
SPEAKER_00And then when I did answer the door, he was fucking trembling, dude. He was genuinely like upset and like worried.
SPEAKER_01That's so that's oh that's kind of sweet. Um yeah, I was gonna say like he doesn't have any he really didn't have anything to gain by uh you know working you at this point. Uh and so yeah, that uh I don't I don't know. This is that's a really cool kind of touching story. Like uh well, good for you and good for him. Um I'm glad you guys you know slapped dicks or whatever and made up uh whatever you guys do. Not every and not every apology works that way, bro. Sorry. Oh. Okay. Well, I've had different experiences in my life, I guess.
SPEAKER_00I know, I know.
Turning Pack Openings Into Videos
SPEAKER_00Uh so um another another fun little cute story, I think, just because with how much you understand and love Robbie. So we also recently made the decision to start making videos of us opening Pokemon packs, uh, the three of us, right?
SPEAKER_01I well, I saw I saw that that was the case. I was gonna say I saw it, but I couldn't watch it because it was on TikTok. It's on YouTube as well.
SPEAKER_00Oh, well, the only thing okay, that's good to know. Uh Jamie posted the TikTok link. I'll I'll send you the YouTube link so you can check him out. Cool. And maybe we could post those also to the to the sp to the page. Uh which uh awkward.
SPEAKER_01Um roles and responsibilities. I'm looking at the swing shift handbook here.
SPEAKER_00Mark, Mark, I need you to Mark Yeah. Um to clarify, to clarify, um, I meant like in the in the description of the podcast uh episode, not like socials. We'll we'll we'll figure out socials down the road here.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um just you know, sort of since you're in the biz now, uh it's it's show notes.
SPEAKER_00It's show notes, it's not a description. Show notes, sorry. All right, thank you, thank you for the clarification. So anyway, all right, back to the story. Um so we we I got the boys on board with it, and um one of the things that I had asked Robbie, because he had put together a couple, you know, YouTube accounts and posted some videos and stuff that he edited himself, and we all kind of noticed he had a pretty good knack for editing. So I was like, hey man, it'd be really cool if you could edit the videos for us. Um just because it would take a lot off my plate. I don't really know what I'm doing. You seem to kind of have a knack for it, and you know, you I'll give you kind of carte blanche to do it however you you want, make it your style. Um, obviously, I have I have to review it and approve it because it's got to be appropriate and kind of on brand for kind of the you know, the style and messaging that I want to convey. But overall, like I want you to take this as an opportunity to try something out. He's like, okay. So as you know, not the audience, but you do, um, they were in Cottonwood for a good portion of last week while Jamie was recovering from a procedure. And um so the plan was I was gonna accumulate some some cards and stuff that I could um have set aside and ready to open as soon as they got back so we could record multiple episodes, right? So as soon as they get home, uh well actually, no, let me back up just a tad. I pick them up, meet them, meet mom and anthem, pick them up, and I go, hey guys, like you know, it's I don't know how you're feeling if it's been a long day, or you know, if you feel like you have the energy for it, but um, I was thinking when we get home, I've got plenty of cards ready to open. Uh, would you guys like to record our first episode? And they're like, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that'd be great. And then Robbie's like, well, um, I might I I might have to um might have to wait a little bit after we get home, but yeah, I'd be happy to do that. I'm like, what do you mean you'd have to wait a little bit? He's like, Well, I have a
A 13-Year-Old With A VR Pizza Shift
SPEAKER_00meeting. I was like, what kind of what kind of fucking 13-year-old has a fucking meeting? Robbie. He's like, uh. So he's like, um, yeah, I um I g I I I have a meeting that I'm supposed to uh hop on uh Discord with uh with my buddy and some other some other kids. I'm like, what can you can you elaborate? He's like um well we he my friend he runs a pizza shop and I I help him with it sometimes. I'm like what um I was like doesn't have a 401k what kind of benefits are they offering? So I was like I was like, wait, hold on. Um is this a real pizza shop or is this like a pizza shop in one of your video games? He's like, oh it's it it's a video game. I'm like, oh okay. I'm like, do you so like wait, hold on. So you your buddy, your this friend of yours opened this pizza shop in this like virtual reality game, right? He's like, yeah. And I'm like, and you punch in to help him make pizzas in this virtual reality game. He's like, yeah. I'm like, do you get paid for this? He's like, no. I'm like, okay.
SPEAKER_01So does the pizza store get paid for the pizza?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Like, does yeah, does he make money? He's like, I don't know. Of course you don't. Of course you wouldn't ask those questions. So then I'm like, okay, um, how often are you are you making pizza? Like, oh, just you know, when he needs help. I'm like, okay, that's very informative. What? And I was like, so what's the fucking point of this meeting? He's like, well, um, I I think I think you know, we're we he we need to kind of figure out like when people can take shifts and all this shit. I'm like, you gotta be shitting me. Yeah, this is the wildest fucking thing in the world, right? Like he's making digital fucking pizzas and he's taking that more seriously than anything in reality. But anyway, cut to. So we run our first video because his meeting got canceled, by the way. So you know, dodge that bullet. Anyway, record our first video, and then I take the the media files and I send them to him. I said, okay, you know, do your thing with them. And I figured, you know, Sunday he wouldn't get he wouldn't do anything, or Saturday he wouldn't do anything, Sunday he wouldn't do anything. And then, you know, Monday rolls around like, hey man, like I'd really like to get this thing out in the next day or so. Like, can you can he get on it? He's like, uh I I just I don't have time. I really don't have the time to use. I was like, you don't have time because you're too busy making digital fucking pizzas while your dad's working a real fucking job, raising a real fucking family, and also you know, trying to put together all these other fucking things going on in real life. He's like, I'm sorry, I just I can't I can't do it. I'm like, okay, wow, thanks a lot, bro.
SPEAKER_01I have a question. Uh yeah. What's the name of the pizza shop?
SPEAKER_00I I didn't fucking bother to ask. I was so just I don't know. It's like it's like confusing and embarrassing all at the same time. I don't want to know anymore that it's it's something.
SPEAKER_01Like I that's I mean it's it's cute though. Well it's really cute. It's fun, it's cute, it's also potentially, and I'm almost proud. Yeah, well, I was gonna say it's almost potentially like a good thing. I mean, if they're I mean if they're taking it seriously and like actually managing a business, so to speak. I mean, at that age, that's I mean, that's that's that could be great.
SPEAKER_00Um Yeah, teach them some work ethic and like ownership into something, but here's the problem. Yeah, yeah. It's like a sim, it sounds like a Sims kind of like a headset virtual reality thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. So he puts on his headset and makes pizzas. Man, goes into his other life. Doesn't he have to like the hand gestures? I don't know how it works. He's like flipping down.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. You're asking you're asking more questions than I know, I know answers to, okay. But here here's the other thing is it sounds like there's some trouble on Pizza Street because apparently this friend of his that started the pizza shop has now uh is now seeking other ventures. And I can't remember what it was, but it I would assume that they're starting their own little uh virtual government, and he's probably running for office.
SPEAKER_01So naturally. Um as one does um once they've conquered the the digital pizza world.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. As a digital uh small business owner, you obviously have uh so ahead.
SPEAKER_01Uh so what's the problem? Like he wants to like well, first of all, how many um fake pizza employees does he have at his fake pizza shop?
SPEAKER_00Apparently double digits. What? Yeah, yeah. I don't know. This kid's like the next freaking uh what's he who's it, serial killer dude from California that got all those chicks to go murder people and steal shit. Yeah what was that guy's name? I always forget his name. Manson? Oh, sure. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Hanson? No. Like Manson. Oh Charles Manson. Yeah, Charles Manson, not Hanson. Um the Bob So stab.
SPEAKER_02So what's the stab stab? Oh my gosh.
The Misery Of A Song Loop
SPEAKER_01Oh, this might actually be a gift to me because like I let me tell you something. Like, uh, I sometimes I really hate my brain and like so I had a song stuck in my head like all day today, right? And I I know it is annoying for everybody, but it's like really aggravating for me because it distracts me, right? And it's always like, my head. And like all day I'm like, go away, go, get out of my head. And like it's just driving- just replaced it with another song. No, it's even well, hopefully you did, because here's the problem. Like, uh, it just drives me crazy. And then uh, like about three hours ago or so, it was it went away and it was gone. And when I realized it's gone, I was like, oh, thank God, that song's not stuck in my head. And then I'm like, what was that song again?
SPEAKER_00What was that?
SPEAKER_01No, it didn't come back. Then I'm like, oh, what's that song? So instead of the song being stuck in my head, now in the last three hours, like, ah, that song is stuck in my head. Like, I hate myself.
SPEAKER_03Uh really you need to keep yourself.
SPEAKER_00Have you ever have you ever heard the trick of apparently getting rid of a song that's stuck in your head? Um, I what I've heard about it is you need to listen to it. No, you you you recollect on the song from start to finish. And if you finish or if you're able to finish your song the song in your head, it'll it'll go away.
SPEAKER_01Oh. Hmm. Interesting. Okay. I I don't actually know the lyrics to it, but maybe I should learn them so I that when I remember what the song is, I can give it out of my head.
SPEAKER_00That's my that's my fucking problem too. I don't I can't Jamie's got this really crazy talent where she can listen to a song two, maybe three times, and she'll know most of the lyrics. I could listen to a song for five fucking years and I'll still know maybe 70%.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. I uh I'm kind of the same way. Um I don't have a difficulty remembering the lyrics, but what I found is I just tend not to well, yeah, I just tend not to really notice, pay much mind to them. Like if there's a song that I like, of course I'll like probably know the chorus, but um I am usually about you know the vocals and the beat and all the kind of like the whole composition. Um Crescendo.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And uh and then sometimes I'll but if I do, you know, at some point I'm like, I'm gonna listen to the lyrics, then I usually remember them, kind of. I don't know. But anyway, uh so back to trouble brewing on uh on Pizza
Pizza Street Drama And Teaching Moments
SPEAKER_01Street. So the guy is launching his campaign for digital senator I guess. Uh so what what's the problem at the Y O pizza shop?
SPEAKER_00I guess it's it's up in the air. Yeah Robbie may be un digitally unemployed here soon. So he might be collecting exactly where he is now. Yeah, he might he might be collecting um uh digital welfare unemployment.
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah, well, okay. I mean yeah, I could I I could see how that's the case, but also like if you have uh if you have a fake pizza empire or you have you know you said double digits, I mean you got 20 some odd people, let's just say like if the guy itself. Well uh yeah, but also like what what's the concern? Like if the guy wants to go be fake president, like doesn't somebody else just want to run the shop or something?
SPEAKER_00I I don't know, man. I don't know. I think that that's the problem is that Robbie doesn't necessarily know how to grab life by the digital balls and just kind of ask those questions.
SPEAKER_01See, this is a good teaching moment is you know, you know, kiddo, here have a lifesaver. And let me tell you, um it sometimes these things come up and then it's it's not worth being stressed about. The thing that stresses you out, kiddo, is the unknown.
SPEAKER_00That was really good. Thank you. I had the conversation I had with him was more about honestly, it's probably for the best. Um that it's a dead end job, and frankly, you know, maybe this is an opportunity for him to focus on going to virtual trade school.
SPEAKER_01I don't know how you can say it's a dead-end job. This other guy did it, and now he's he's basically vice president.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's fair. I mean, would you rather be the guy making the pizzas or the guy that's fixing the pizza oven? I mean, I would there's a lot of pizza ovens that need fixing, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um Well, okay, another question. Uh I'm it's really fascinating, this whole business.
SPEAKER_00Um I the more you you fucking are asking questions, the more I'm becoming fascinated.
SPEAKER_01Well, I mean you Yeah, and that's why I said earlier it may be a a good thing, like a s a good experience thing. It just depends on like how how it works. Now I'm really curious because if it's just a thing where it's like uh Yeah, I have uh I have N pizza shop, and so if you want to work for me, then you come in and quote make pizzas, which means you sit there and push a button over and over. Or is it like, you know, you've got front of the house, back of the house, you've got dishwasher, you've got uh, you know, office manager, you know, like are they ordering supplies? Are they doing, you know, like all this stuff? Often it's just Robbie happens to be one of the no, it's like how, yeah, how uh how expansive is it? And it's like they all just come you know come in and make pizzas, or just like that's what Robbie's doing. He's working his way up.
SPEAKER_00Maybe maybe what we should do is tight table this conversation and we can ask him these questions um at a later time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. My thoughts on that is really gonna eat away at me because I'm really curious, but yeah, that's probably for the best. Or I can bring him in here right now and we can pick his brand. Uh we can try it, yeah. Oh god, okay, by the way.
Looney Tunes Hype And Movie Tangents
SPEAKER_01Yeah, did you see the trailer for the new um Looney Tunes movie? No. Yeah, it's called Coyote versus Acme. Oh my god. Oh, I think I saw like a snippet of it. Yeah. How does it look? It looks fucking awesome. Like, oh my god, it looks so good. Yeah, um, there's I didn't even really know it was out there. I just saw uh there's they just released a clip today, like a uh like a one-minute clip from a scene. But I guess there's been trailers out and stuff. And you know the idea where you bring in Robbie and it made me think of uh one of the trailers because like it this should just sell it for you at the end of one of the trailers. It's uh oh god, what's his name? John Cena. Is he the big one but the f but who's funny, not like the other one?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Who's the other one?
SPEAKER_01Uh oh, the rock. Which one is good?
SPEAKER_00He's pretty funny.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Which one is am I thinking of?
SPEAKER_00Well, one of them's Polynesian, the other one's pretty much white. The white one. Yeah, John Cena. Okay. I I'm shocked you could even see him. Only wrestling fans would get that joke.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Uh, I believe it. But now they're like at the end of one of the trailers. You gotta watch at the end of one of the trailers, it's John Cena interrogating Tweety Bird.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01Okay, I'm in.
SPEAKER_00I know. So in. Sold. Oh, have you seen speaking of
Why Project Hail Mary Works
SPEAKER_00movies? Have you seen um Project Hail Mary? Fucking yes. Whoa. Isn't that great? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Did you read the book?
SPEAKER_00No, I don't read anything.
SPEAKER_01I don't even read instructions on freaking hamburger helper, dude. According to my notes, you're in the middle of an anger management book.
SPEAKER_00So oh yeah, that's right. Fuck, you got me on that one. No, I've completed it. That's the last thing I read. Oh, okay. Anyway, jokes aside, right?
SPEAKER_01I didn't know it was even a book. Well, yeah. And by all accounts, most accounts, a phenomenal book, by the way. Um, and I don't know if you know this, but um, did you see The Martian? Yes, love that. Okay, so The Martian was based on a book as well. The book was written by Andy Weir, and um Project Hail Mary was uh also a book written by Andy Weir. Interesting. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So the guy's into space, uh really into space. Theoretical space uh situations like yeah, so so my my understanding of like what the movie was about was completely misled. And I I was misled. Um so a lot of people were trying to compare it to like interstellar, and I'm like, okay, this is gonna be you know pretty like deep, um, really like somber drama, right? And then get like 10 minutes into it, I'm like, is this supposed to be funny? Or am I like unintentionally high, you know, or just you know, slap happy? And then it keeps going, I'm like, this is this is fucking funny, and then it gets into the the portion where he's in space and trying to underst observe this uh foreign star, and it's like, oh my god, this is like a cute like family movie. It's a very sweet, very sweet movie. It's adorable. Yeah, it is.
SPEAKER_01I loved it. Uh I I mean I I had a really high expectation, and by the way, that you hear that noise?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Apparently there was a cat hiding out in here this whole time. Um flash, like, dude, okay. Just so far he's been somewhat good. Um yeah, no, Interstellar, like man.
Interstellar Debate And Black Hole Reality
SPEAKER_01That was a rough watch. I mean, I like the first whatever, two-thirds of it was good, right? But I just I don't like that movie. It just got too stupid for me. What is it like?
SPEAKER_00Really?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you liked it?
SPEAKER_00I loved it. Interesting. Like one of my top three favorite movies. Whoa.
SPEAKER_01I would have never fucking guessed that. Okay, well let's talk about it.
SPEAKER_00Why do you feel like it's why do you feel like it's so stupid towards the end?
SPEAKER_01Well, I don't I don't much care in general for like the sort of in any movie or show, like the sort of I'm gonna call it supernatural, and I know that's not what it is here, but like that sort of ethereal, like, you know, other things at play, what at Invisible 4. That sort of like I don't like that I'm gonna say dream sequence also, not what this is. I hate dream sequences. I hate when I'm watching a movie and there's things happening, and then like the person wakes up. I fucking hate that. And that was sort of a side note tangent, but no, just the whole like he I'm trying to recall it, um, like he his daughter from the future told him to go, you know, just it was it's like it if for me, it's just like it's a little fucking out there.
SPEAKER_00It is, but I guess the thing that you could appreciate, I that I guess that's why it's kind of surprising to me, is just I the the thing that you could appreciate is how well thought out it was as far as adhering to the most current and um uh accepted theories as far as like the space-time continuum and uh and like how space travel and time itself relates to one another. It because I mean it was very well done in that regard, especially with like theoretics around different, you know, uh gravitational poles and wavelengths and stuff. They also have you have you ever done like any like research into like the amount of time and energy that went in just to creating the black hole image that was in the movie?
SPEAKER_01Um I yes and no. So I don't know like the stats with regard to how much uh input it took. I was gonna actually mention it though, because the one thing I do know, which I and to your point, I do have a lot of respect for all those aspects of it and the production quality of it and the visuals, like all very good. Um, but no, the black hole thing. What I do know about it is like before that movie, like we had never visually imaged a black hole, right? Correct. And so they basically they, I don't know who, both very smart people working on this film, they just MT, I believe. Oh, really? Okay. They just dumped a bunch of like all the data they could about black holes and the theories and stuff into some super compute fucking thing, and it's like, what's it, you know, just calculated what would it fucking look like and made that visual. And then since that movie, we have, I believe I'm right about this, we have visually like shot, spotted, image, an actual black hole, right? And it turns out that that's pretty much the right on the money. Yeah. See, that's incredibly mind-blowing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that it is. And okay, so I just pulled it up. So um, how long did it take to create gargantua? The timeline isn't given as a single total number of days, but the sources make the scale clear. It was approximately a hundred hours per frame to render the black hole and twenty-four frames per second, meaning approximately 2,400 hours or a hundred days of computing for one second of finished footage. The full simulation generated over 800 terabytes of data. Yeah. That's that's incredible.
SPEAKER_01You know what's even more nuts though? Is like you're you're just talking about the like the compute, the rendering. Like, this this is like these super smart people have done all the math and input all the data and made their assumptions, blah, blah. You're just talking about the part after they do all of that and then hit the button. Like, that's what's insane.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they were able to, they're so smart, and their our our math over centuries has been so sound, or whatever you want to call it, that they actually they fucking nailed it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, there's probably like uh I just envision, you know, some old uh like Einstein or whatever, you know, up in up in heaven or whatever, and be like, I fucking told you, Bob.
SPEAKER_02You owe me 50 bucks, man.
SPEAKER_00Well, in in in my defense, I'm a huge Christopher Nolan fan too.
Nolan Rankings And IMAX Talk
SPEAKER_00Like I love a lot of the movies that he put together. So Dark Knight is one of my top fives. Like, yeah, he's if if he put like I'm really trying to get to go see Odyssey right now because I've been looking forward to it for a long time, ever since the previews came out. The only one I'm not like that was I feel like a little overhyped, this may be this may be controversial. I don't know. But I wasn't a great big fan of Oppenheimer. I actually haven't watched it. It's good, but it's definitely not like oh man, that's so good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. I've um well, I was gonna say I've heard mixed reviews, but I really haven't. It's been pretty universally praised. But um the here's the thing about the Odyssey, dude, is like you you need to go see it. You need to see it while it's in uh IMAX. IMAX, yeah, I know. He shot it on 70 millimeter, like, and he's been telling people like go go fucking watch this movie the way it's meant to be seen. Okay. It's uh just crazy. Like, I I actually have not seen a trailer or anything about it because I frankly have no interest in the movie. I'll probably watch it at some point, but um, I know about it because excuse me, when uh when it came out and I mean as reviews started coming out, I was like, I think this may be the most universally acclaimed movie I've seen in my lifetime. Um it's got a 94% on on Rotten Tomatoes. It's got uh 97% on popcorn meter. I don't know what that means, but um uh let's see here.
SPEAKER_00Okay, let me let me get with you. Okay, so the popcorn meter, I so the tomato meter is the the critics on Rotten Tomatoes itself, and then the popcorn meter is fan uh reviews. Okay, good.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so they finally gave it a name. That makes sense because I thought, yeah. Um, I mean that's that's pretty fucking high. Uh 94, 97. But anyway, um the Flash. Hold on, I'll say I'll say what I said to Jamie earlier. You know we're doing a show right now, right, Flash? Um the uh goddamn. Oh, Interstellar. Yeah, um anyway, back to the original point, really, which is Project Hail Mary. Um yeah, like such a cute movie, sweet movie, great family movie. Um I some things I really loved about it specifically. Um I really like the font they use on like the um the control screens and stuff in the spaceship. I thought it was pretty good. We would say fucking something like that. I know, and it's the worst part is it's true. Um yeah, it is it is it is very pleasing. Yeah, but but no, for one one thing I really love I really love that uh that what's her face uh character. Good old what's her face. No, I mean there's like two characters besides Rocky in the whole movie. So it's that uh the the the late the German lady. Oh what else is she in? I don't know. I'm talking no, I'm talking about her character. Oh, you liked her character. I loved that character. Why? Um it was like uh interesting. Well, yeah. Uh so sh basically she's for anybody who hasn't seen the movie, she's uh she's a you know, German, I don't say middle-aged, she's probably like in her forties, you know, when the movie stars. And she's it's never really said, but it's uh pretty obvious that basically like the world has a world-ending problem, and she has been identified as the person, maybe not the smartest person in the world, but the person to get it done, and she's been empowered with infinite resources and authority to do so, right? What do you say that's fair? She Yeah, she she's she's the the project manager of that motherfucker. Yeah, she yeah, and yeah, the whole fucking thing. Um so what what I uh what I liked about her is um her I I guess I would call it like competence
Competence As A Kind Of Comfort
SPEAKER_01porn. Like I really love the depiction of like on in film and on TV of like people who are just uh unabashedly competent and good at what they do, and they know it and they don't ex have to explain themselves and they you know they don't take their shit. Yeah, what yeah, and exactly, and I'm not I don't know if you're talking about acting, I'm more talking but yeah, either way. Um had and that was uh you know, kind of back to my point, I just realized this is like there w there was no explanation needed for why she had the authority and the power that she did once you saw how she was, right? It's like yeah, this is definitely the right the right bit for the job. I I buy it, I buy it, yeah. Yeah. Um I yeah, really good movie. I'm s I I'm glad you brought it up. I'm still surprised on the interstellar thing, honestly, but um really well I it just doesn't seem like it'd be your speed, honestly. I mean I get it now that you've explained it, but it just really doesn't.
SPEAKER_00What okay, just for curiosity's sake. What in your opinion would be my speed of movie? Fast 13. You motherfucker, I knew it. Uh I hate you. Oh yeah. Um Teletubbies in space.
SPEAKER_01Um hey, uh, you
Stargate SG-1 And Worldbuilding Logic
SPEAKER_01know what? Is um we've talked about it before, but like now that it now that I've heard this about you know, interst whatever. Uh Stargate SG1, man. This this show would totally be your fucking jam. Hello. Although it would be your jam if you're still here, which you're not. I can't hear you. Yeah, no, can you hear me now? Yeah. That was weird. Um, okay, so I'm gonna jump back. I I guess I don't know. Stargate SG1. Yeah. Uh and three, two. Um, no, we talked about it before Stargate SG1. And uh something uh again I would never have recommended for you because I just like overall it really didn't take you for a sci-fi person at all, is one thing. Um, and then uh it's but what I think how we got on that is what you were talking about um uh oh he I think you went on a wormhole one day on YouTube and you're like, uh did you know that like aliens have actually been here forever and like maybe they built the pyramids? Right, yeah. And I and I'm like they're in Antarctica, by the way. Yeah, and as a responsible brother who recognizes that you've gone off on a bender, I was like, oh bro, it's way crazier than that. Get this. Actually, aliens. But no, the um the premise, uh you probably did, it's been a long time, but uh the original Stargate movie. Oh, yeah, there's no chance I remember. Yeah, so basically, like the the plot of that movie is they find this Stargate, like this big ring, right? And buried in ancient well, I guess it would be current Egypt, but uh well, buried in Egypt. And hasn't moved. Yeah, hasn't moved. Yeah, and so they um it it they figure out because it's got higher what they think are hieroglyphs on it, they figure out that it's a device of some kind, as in it can be activated. They don't really know much beyond that. And then they figure out that it's a portal device, meaning that you activate it and it connects a fucking wormhole to another planet. Well, to another stargate. Yeah, so that was the movie, and they did that, and they the movie the movie and the the show uh SG1 are like same same baseline premise, but like very different tones. The movie was like a Kurt Russell action movie. Um SG1 is like sci-fi comedy action. It's a it's a much light, lighter, more fun show. And it has uh Richard Dean Anderson in it. Cool. McGyver.
SPEAKER_00Okay, we've never watched that.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay. Well, uh anyway, yeah. He he was a guy who played MacGyver, and he so he's the he's the lead in this show as well as well. But like the diff what they did different in so the premise of SG1 is that okay, basically they had they had this Stargate and they had it in uh you know, an underground Air Force complex, and like it was just there, like they'd used it, whatever, and all you know, interstellar war almost broke out when they use it in the movies, so like we probably don't we're not gonna do that in the worse. And uh then it then it basically like fires up one day randomly, and come to find out it's not it's a whole network of stargates throughout the whole galaxy that were built by a race of aliens like you know millions of years ago or whatever, um long gone. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Pause.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That you you just buy into, but fucking a dude's daughter building a freaking uh ter uh whatever they call it, the freaking interdimensional woven thing where it was it it basically put it rendered a physical version of this of space and time to where he could go back to communicate to his daughter when she was a kid to walk her through how to fucking solve for gravity. That's a pro that's a stretch, but that a fucking, you know, a a huge plethora network of Stargates is yeah, totally acceptable. Yeah, aliens did it, got it. I'm in.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, correct.
SPEAKER_00Hypocrite, hypocrite.
SPEAKER_01Uh it's so I get your point. It's actually it's it's a it's an interesting, um, it's an interesting sort of like whatever nuance to what we're talking about here, which is like the difference for me is like everything you just fucking said about like the daughter and the hamstring and the harpsichord and fucking I don't know. Like you even hearing a harps cord. I don't even know what it was. It was a book.
SPEAKER_00It was a string to the it was a string uh that was a physic a physical rendering of of how he could actually manipulate time from the past, right? And so he was flicking a string using Moore's code to communicate with her through a watch. Like that. It's fucking cool.
SPEAKER_01It's it's fine. I mean, it's interesting, I guess. Like, as a creative choice, it's fuck you know, I didn't I felt like I was a little confused about what the whole thing was when I watched the movie. I'm more confused after listening to you try to fucking explain it to me. Let me tell you what the difference between horrendous. That hurts. Well, let me tell you though the difference between like uh Interstellar and Stargate, just in terms of this like, you know, suspension of belief thing or what the disbelief. What?
SPEAKER_00I I I just love how you frame things up. Continue, please.
SPEAKER_01Don't uh don't let me interrupt you. Well now I'm self-conscious. Um, it's great. What do I do with my hands? Uh the core the core drove real good. Uh okay, so like the was specifically with regard to Stargate SG1, the um like the what is happening in terms of like the the network of gates and you know connected by that can be connected by wormholes is like it's a it's explained and it's sort of couched in a very mechanical way in that like and here's one thing that ties it to reality for me, is the um the whole network is based on um basically uh coordinates in space, and so like each gate has a gate address, which is a sequence of like um constellations or star cluster or whatever, basically, right? Six and why is six important? Because if you want to if you want to identify a point in three-dimensional space, imagine a cube, right? So you need uh a dot on each face, right? Yeah, that's how you get six. Ah, but there's seven, there's seven coordinates on a stargate when you dial out. Um, and this is what stumped them in the movie, but then Dr. Daniel Jackson came and he figured it out. The seventh, and this is the part that a lot of people overlook when they're talking about traveling, you know, through space and time, is the seventh is what if you want to travel from here to Abydos, let's say, you need to know where Abydos is, but also you need to know where you're starting from, right? Right. So the seventh symbol when you dial in a gate address is always the origin.
SPEAKER_00Origin. Interesting.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm. So Earth has a symbol. Like Earth has a symbol, right? And so like each whatever. Um what's Earth symbol? It's uh it's actually a pyramid. Um it's a pyramid with a little like circle of so I guess like a sun over it, yeah. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00So like okay, okay. All right. So like the when when you're dialing in your code at the Stargate, it's kind of like like those what I would imagine like uh a uh super futuristic version of those like those little um uh padlocks that have the roly numbers on it.
SPEAKER_01You know, this is uh I'm glad you asked that question because this actually is a great it it sets up even better to uh for me to explain like my thing uh about getting this and not getting interstellar. So that's why I'm the host. Yeah, yeah. You know, we there's there is a fair recruitment process. We both went through the interview process and you won. And I don't you don't need to like keep bringing it up. Um but like uh okay, so yeah, when so in this gate network, wherever there's a stargate, there's there's what what they what the Earth people decide to call a DHD, which is uh a dial home device. And it's like uh it's more like um it's kind of like I would say, you know, maybe two feet across in a circle, kind of. It's like two circles, two concentric circles, and it's um, you know, got all the symbols, and so you go ching, ching, ching, ching, like you push them down in sequence, right? That's how you do it. But here's was another really cool thing. And what for me kind of ties like grounds it is when they found the original Stargate on Earth, there was no DHD. So they like used modern, and at the time, this is mid-90s, right? They basically built they basically mechanized, they figured out a way to move the Stargate to specific things as the computer, uh like a 90s computer, punched in uh that. So that's how that's how they dialed the Earthgate out, but like just because they didn't have a DHD, but everywhere else there was usually a DHD. Interesting. Yeah. And uh here's the other thing about it, is it's in the hands of the Air Force, and um so you have whereas like Star Trek or something like that, you have sort of this space travel and stuff going on, but it's like with phasers and you know that kind of stuff. No, they fucking Stargate SG1 is uh uh a team of four people, and they fucking go shooting through the fucking wormhole across the galaxy to these alien planets with fucking P90s and a beretta. I'm I'm so fucking in. It's fucking badass, and it has Amanda tapping in it, which she's fantastic. I don't know. I I fantastic act actress. Uh sh she's she's a good actress. No, she's just super adorable. She's like blonde hair, blue-eyed, um, and just like great smile, you know, just winning personality, but she's the fucking brains. Like she's the fucking brains. That's what I love about it. Like she's the fucking not I guess she's she's not the typecasted blonde. No, but but she's looks great doing it, and she's really fun, and like she's the one who like solves all the fucking tech problems, and she's a fucking, you know, colonel in the Air Force, too. And so she's out like, you know, sometimes though they're trying to escape or whatever, and the fucking the DHD on whatever planet they're in got blowed up, and so you know, like the team is like putting down suppressive fire to shoot out these aliens, or not aliens, but like people coming at them. And meanwhile, she's hot wiring the fucking Stargate, you know, she's like with tinfoil and a paperclip, and then she turned around and pops off a few rounds of the P90, and it's just like I fucking love it.
SPEAKER_00It's like hold on, let me unplug it for 30 seconds and plug it back in. I think I'm that might fix it. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um I I'm gonna I'll send you uh I'm I'm a big advocate of like when see now I'm now I'm hearing it. Like how I frame things. Huh. Kind of a douchebag.
SPEAKER_00Anyway, um well in one episode you kept saying my beautiful mind. So yeah, I think we're past that point.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I I know, and I I realized that too. I think on one of the episodes where I said something, and you're like, uh, yeah, no shit. And I'm like, you know what? Sometimes I I think I just say things for myself, and I think that's fire why I frame things the way I do. I'm like, because you know my brain is a is insane insanity sometimes, and it really adds. I think sometimes I almost have to do that, you know, like I have to I have to set the framework of the following sentence, otherwise I won't even understand it. You need a grounding rod in every conversation. Yeah. Um, but anyway, like, you know, when I recommend a show like like this, which has got uh 10 C's and you know, it's got a lot to it. Um I'm not I'm not I don't think people should start from the first episode usually because you're jumping into a whole thing. So I'm gonna send you the episode I think you should start with. Okay. Which I believe is in like season four. Um and yeah, it's so it's at the point where it's a great episode, first of all, but it's the at the point where you know they've gotten their legs on or whatever. But yeah, and that was back in the days where they, you know, they did 22 one-hour shows a season, you know, so there's like 215 episodes of this thing, too.
SPEAKER_00Jeez, that's crazy. Well, okay, so just a quick question. You don't have to give up too much, hopefully. But like okay. They're they spend ten seasons traveling the fucking universe, right? I'm assuming. And the the galaxy. Oh, just the galaxy.
SPEAKER_01The Milky Way. Just this galaxy.
SPEAKER_00Just the Milky Way.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Okay. Well, except for there's a little bit in the Pegasus galaxy, but anyway, I think that's all beside the point. Go ahead.
SPEAKER_00The point, the point that I'm driving at is in ten seasons, twenty episodes per season, I would assume twenty different adventures on twenty different planets throughout the galaxy and summon Pegasus or whatever the fuck you just said. They never like decided to go, hey, maybe these guns are kind of like, you know, rudimentary compared to the other shit that these aliens are carrying around. Maybe we should, you know, reverse engineer with this super brainy chick and bring it back to our planet.
SPEAKER_01So here's here's the thing. This is a really good question, by the way. And it gets to a really interesting aspect of um the Stargate universe, which is if you fucking butterfly affect me right now, Dan, I'm gonna hang up. What does that mean?
SPEAKER_00Like, if we don't we we never bring technology from another planet back to Earth because it could upset the equilibrium of the galaxy of the universe or whatever the fuck.
SPEAKER_01Oh no.
SPEAKER_00Am I on the money? No. Oh fuck, okay.
SPEAKER_01They're like on They're like, we want the fucking tech. Like, give it gives but here's the thing. Um the the call 'em the ancients, which is the long, long gone um uh race that built the Stargate network, right? Like they're totally long gone. And so the Stargate network had has been uh for thousands of years or whatever, basically um sort of co-opted by uh another race who they're not great guys, um and they have spaceships and stuff and they can do like hyperspace travel. But the to answer partially answer your question, on most of the planets that the Stargates are on, um this other race has basically kept the populations low and not advanced and in in in slavery. So basically, like uh they have planets where they grow, you know, they do farming and agriculture, and like this is where we get our corn from or whatever. Um and so there's that, but then that's what's really interesting is that this race, because they're the bad guys, is kind of like the villain in this thing, and so then they get wind that oh wait, uh now that now that SG1's poking around, they get wind that there's a very highly populated planet called Earth with a stargate. Oh untapped resources. Yes, and so now they're coming after us. So basically almost from the get um the the Air Force and SG1 are they're like they're they're looking for technology to protect themselves from these guys. Um and then that being said, there's a there are a few different races, um, and then there's a another race, and this is where the the uh Nordic mythology comes in, which I don't think I mentioned that this time, but when we originally talked about it, I did. Um the Asgard, and they're super advanced, and they basically ally with Earth, but they are also very cognizant of the fact that you guys are neophytes when it comes to traveling to stars, right? And so they don't just hand over like uh phasers and lasers and shit. Like they help us with they help us with hyperdrive and like they're very involved in making sure that when we build our first like hyper drive ship that like uh you guys know what you're doing, and like we're only gonna give you the technology, we're not gonna give you too much to where you can be dangerous to yourselves or other people. And then over time though, you know, they they do it so that it it kind of grows. Um to where yeah, then eventually they'll they'll give us shields for the shit, you know, that kind of stuff. And so yeah, it's uh and and just one of the things about Stargast G1 that I mean I think it's just a really fun it's a really fun show, blah blah blah. But it the world building in it is incredible. Like I could talk for another two hours about this kind of stuff and just like the plot points and the premise of it and like barely scratch the surface because there's just so many layers to it. I don't know if you ever heard of an onion, but it's got like layers.
SPEAKER_00Okay. So I I hate to do this to you, but um I've seen a lot of parallels between this show and Interstellar because you have these stargates, right? Well, what do you think the fucking black hole was in Interstellar? It was a black hole. No, it was it was created by people from the future to help the people of the present discover another habitable planet to to survive.
The Stargate For Interstellar Trade
SPEAKER_00Oh man, you need when's the last time you watched Interstellar? I don't know, when did it come out? 2014 Probably like um ten years. Okay. Watch it again. If if I watch Stargate SG1, you have to watch Interstellar again and actually We'll do kind of like an episode kind of like what you did with Mark, where you'll watch Finding Nemo, but this will actually be a good movie to watch.
SPEAKER_01Finding Nemo was pretty universally appra acclaimed as well. And I'm really gonna stop myself here because we don't need to go off on an emo tangent on this show, but um, okay. Um I'm gonna modify your deal a little bit because an episode of Stargate is only an hour. Parentheses, about 40 minutes, right? Um I'll watch Interstellar if you watch two episodes of Stargate. SU1 curated by me. Okay. And you give it a fair shake, and I'll give this one a fair shake. And we will reconnoiter at uh a later date. At a later shift. There you go.
Punching Out And Next Shift Tease
SPEAKER_01So stay tuned for that, uh, mom.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, thank thanks, thanks for listening, mom. And uh time to punch out, and we'll see you on the next swing shift.
